Sony Xperia Z3 back on sale at T-Mobile and with a new lower price

Claims that T-Mobile discontinued the Sony Xperia Z3 a few weeks ago seem to have been a bit premature. Although the device was reportedly no longer for sale earlier this month, it seems it may have simply been out of stock. The Xperia Z3 has returned to T-Mobile, sporting a new, lower price tag than before.

Marked down from 0 to 0 (full price), the phone can be put on a T-Mobile payment plan for just .83 a month for 2 years. Not a bad deal for a fully capable Android handset, one of the best even. After Sony quietly announced the Sony Xperia Z4 in Japan to little fanfare, our fingers are crossed Sony has something better planned for later this year.

Sony Xperia Z4 appears in new renders taken from the Sony Pictures hack, new details rumored

It was right towards the tail end of last year Sony Pictures made headlines after a North Korean hackivist group leaked out the company’s confidential documents. Aside from leaking a stack of very interesting emails about the studio’s future movie productions (apparently Leonardo DeCaprio is really hard to work with), the forth coming Sony Xperia Z4 also made an appearance.

It wasn’t much, just a handful of leaked concepts, but it clued us in on what Sony’s mobile division could be planning for the handset. Of course, later leaks of an alleged Sony Xperia Z4 began making the rounds, showing something much more akin to the design philosophy of Sony’s previous Xperia line. It was a bit of a let down, but it seemed to make a little more sense for Sony’s struggling smartphone division.

More recently new “leaker” @ViziLeaks claimed this device wasn’t the Sony Xperia Z4 at all, but something called the Sony Xperia Z3 Neo. What’s more the leaker now says the new Sony Xperia Z4 is on track for a September release and will feature an all-metal construction along with an improved power button with fingerprint scanning technology built inside.

With the previously leaked documents now archived and easily searchable on Wikileaks, people are once again turning to the Sony Pictures hack to dig up any info on the previously leaked Xperia Z4, which according to emails, should be making an appearance in this year’s new James Bond flick.

What was found were a few images we didn’t get a look at during last year’s leak, but show something closer to what @ViziLeaks could have been talking about. Namely, a completely redesigned look — and home button — along with a unibody type metal housing, and references to a 2.5D glass display panel.

 

But the leaked PDF raises more questions than it actual answers. It’s possible we could be looking at nothing but unfinished internal concept renders of multiple devices — not just the Xperia Z4. There’s a smaller device that has more rounded corners and a cushiony backside. Really, everything is up in the air at this point.

According to one leaked email, the target release date was originally set for April/May/June 2015, putting a launch right around the time Sony’s new tablet would hit the market. That being said, the doc was dated October 2014, so a lot can change in that amount of time. Whether we’ll see a completely redesigned Sony Xperia Z4 (or just another rehashed model) in time for the launch of the Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet or later this summer remains to be seen.

Something to consider before buying the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact for $400 on eBay [DEALS]

Without question the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is one of the best smartphones on the market. Fantastic battery life, great camera, all in a bite-sized package that’s perfect for 1-handed use. Today, the Z3c — in black, white, red, and green — was thrown up on eBay where it’s been marked down to a very reasonable 0. It’s a great deal to be sure, one that’s about cheaper than you’ll find on Sony’s website. But before you grab your credit card, keep in mind this is not the US model (D5803) sold direct from Sony’s US store.

This particular model is the D5833. That means if you’re looking to buy for use here in the states, you should be okay if you’re on AT&T (it seems to supports all of AT&T’s frequency bands), but even then we’ve seen reports of weird IMEI editing tricks that needed to be done in order to fully unlock dormant LTE bands. So, proceed with caution.

If you’re looking to purchase for use on T-Mobile, you’ll want to stick with the D5803 model on Sony’s site. For everyone else in other parts of the world, you’ll want to make sure this specific model plays nice with your carrier’s frequency bands before picking it up. In either case, it is a great deal and probably the best small smartphone you an buy right now.

Sony has officially unveiled the Xperia Z4: Snapdragon 810, 5.2-inch 1080p display and 20.7MP camera

We’ve been wondering how long it would take for Sony to officially unwrap their flagship for 2015, but the company did so this morning as they announced the Sony Xperia Z4 in their home territory of Japan. So what’s on tap?

Nothing out of the ordinary, really. This is Sony as we’ve come to know and love them, with a familiar design that has graced many-a phone in the Xperia lineup over the past couple of years.

It isn’t identical to any previous designs, mind you, but the subtle tweaks to things like the outside corners of the chassis and speaker placement are sure to be under-appreciated by all but the most hardcore Sony fans. The Sony Xperia Z4 features a metal frame and doesn’t do anything to compromise its ability to be dust and water resistant, something that has become an important point of emphasis for Sony in recent times.

Under the hood is a different story: this phone is an absolute beast, and no Sony phone has yet to boast such an impressive set of specs. Take a look at what will have its motors running:

We’re sure they will bring it to other markets eventually — their previous flagships have launched for international markets — but there’s no official word or any further details right now. Hands-on: Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet [VIDEO]

Sony took their time bringing us an updated 10-inch slate, but the wait seems well worth it based on our initial impressions of the Xperia Z4 Tablet. The slate continues to showcase Sony’s dedication to design, and the first thing immediately noticeable is how light it is. Add to this the fact that the Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet measures in at an amazing 6.1mm thin and we have the beginnings of another gorgeous Android device from the Japanese manufacturer.

The Xperia Z4 Tablet runs Android Lollipop on top of an impressive hardware package that includes an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset at its core. A 2K (2560 x 1600) display is a marked improvement over its 10-inch predecessor, the Z2 Tablet. A holdover from the earlier slate is a 6000mAh battery, but Sony promises improved battery life nonetheless.

A nifty addition to the Z4 Tablet is the inclusion of a Bluetooth keyboard, a response to the growing popularity of the Microsoft Surface and tablets that serve as full notebook replacements. The Z4 Tablet docks firmly in place and connects via Bluetooth, supporting mouse input with multi-finger gestures for scrolling and more. Sony does modify the slate’s Lollipop OS to provide an environment more friendly to productivity, including the ability to add an abundance of items to the shortcut bar.

Other goodies include waterproof construction for added durability and options for LTE connectivity. The Xperia Z4 Tablet will launch in Europe this June at a price of 550 euro.

Sony Xperia Z4 leaked press render shows familiar design with subtle differences

The Sony Xperia Z4 is a device still very much surrounded in mystery. Sure we’ve heard rumors and seen a few component leaks, but nothing really solid. Today, @OnLeaks is providing an alleged press render of the upcoming device, showing a design that should be all too familiar for Xperia fans.

Like every new iteration, there are small changes that lead us to believe this is legit. For one, the absence of the Sony Xperia Z3’s micro SD card slot on the right side of the device. This lines up perfectly with an alleged Xperia Z4 frame leaked alongside the previous Z3 (from the same source, no less).

According to previous leaks, the Sony Xperia Z4 is looking like it will be thinner, come equipped with a Snapdragon 810 processor, 4GB of RAM, and pack a 21MP camera. Hopefully battery capacity hasn’t been downsized for this new slimmer model.

 

Sony Xperia P2 leaks with flagship specs and compact size

The Sony Xperia Z4 was recently announced with very little fanfare. We drooled over the Sony Xperia Z3, but they didn’t make many improvements with the Z4. We’re still waiting for that killer next phone from Sony, and it looks like the Xperia P2 could be it.

The Xperia P was a mid-range phone released back in 2012. You may remember it for the transparent strip that would light up with a notification. Leaked specs and diagrams have revealed a follow-up to this device, but with flagship specs. According to the leak the new P2 has a 5.2-inch 1080p display with tiny bezels. The camera will be a revamped 12MP shooter. Other specs include a massive 4,240 mAh battery, 3GB of RAM, and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810.

This is one of those leaks that sounds too good to be true. If Sony really does release a device with these top-notch specs and tiny bezels it will be a hot item. The beauty of this device is it has similar specs to the Z4, but the small bezels allow it to be much smaller. Huge phones are just not for everyone. What do you think about the P2 leaks?

We put the Sony Xperia M4 Aqua’s waterproof construction to the test [VIDEO]

On paper the Sony Xperia M4 Aqua isn’t the most exciting of handsets. Don’t let the lack of premium ‘Z’ branding fool you though, the Xperia M4 Aqua packs a compliment of features that aren’t that far off from last year’s Sony Xperia Z3 into a plastic frame with an approachable price.

But the real selling point is the M4’s waterproof design and construction. As the Aqua name implies, Sony took some time to improve this aspect of the handset, earning both IP65 and IP68 ratings while skirting the need for physical flaps to cover the device’s ports. No more need to worry about sealing off the USB. The Xperia M4 will survive submersion in 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes. The design itself is reminiscent of previous Xperia releases while cutting back on some of the more expensive build options like metal accents.

We didn’t have 30 minutes to sit around and see what would happen after the time limit ran up, but we did get a chance to dunk the Xperia M4 Aqua in a fish tank. As promised, the phone not only functioned while underwater but emerged unharmed.

So what can we expect from the M4 Aqua? Here’s the details:

The Xperia M4 Aqua will launch this spring at a price of 299 euro (~0). That’s an amazing off-contract price for a phone that gets you pretty close to Sony’s most recent flagship devices.

Sony Xperia Z4 leaked from every angle, newly exposed charging port and all

In an update to yesterday’s “teaser” leak where we only got a look at half of the device, we’re now getting a real good look at the upcoming Sony Xperia Z4 from just about every angle. The new renders, which the author notes are still early and subject to change, reveal some interesting changes coming to Sony’s flagship.

On the smaller side of changes, the SIM slot has been moved from the right side of the device to the left. Although it’s not labeled, it could share a slot with the micro SD card. You’ll also notice Sony going with more of an Xperia Z2 style speaker slits along the very top and bottom of the display glass. No biggie.

Probably the most notable changes are the absence of the charging dock pins along the side, as well as the moving of the charging port from the top left — where it was hidden under a waterproof flap — down to the bottom, where it is now completely exposed. So what does that mean for water resistance?

Sony Mobile has long made it a water resistance a staple of their entire Xperia line, even on the low-end. Ditching this ethos on a new flagship would be counter-intuitive and simply wouldn’t make sense for a company that’s been struggling to make headway into a crowded smartphone market.

We can’t say for certain what we’re looking at here, not until Sony makes it official. Judging by recent leaks — and the influx of 2015 flagships — we imagine that wont be too much longer.

UPDATE: As our some have pointed out in the comments, Sony is no longer hiding the charging port behind a waterproof flap in their latest devices like the Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet, and the Sony Xperia M4 Aqua, but still keeping that high Ingress rating (IP65/68).

Sony Xperia Z4 may have stopped by the FCC, confirms micro SD card slot ain’t going nowhere

There are no guarantees in life. When it comes to mobile devices, just because a previous iteration of a flagship device packed specific hardware (a micro SD card slot and/or removable battery for instance) doesn’t always guarantee the next model will have the same. And if the Samsung Galaxy S6 taught us anything, it’s that long revered hardware features can up and leave in a moment’s notice.

Be all that as it may, we’re hyped about Sony’s next flagship smartphone. Initially we though we could be a ways off from a Sony Xperia Z4 launch, but a new Sony device that recently passed through the FCC — packing almost the same dimensions as the previous Sony Xperia Z3 — could suggest we’re closer to a launch than we previously thought. While the FCC documentation doesn’t reveal too many surprises (the device in question is packing a nice amount of frequency bands to support US networks), it did manage to confirm the existence of the micro SD card slot on the device.

We know, it’s nothing groundbreaking, but sometimes it’s nice to have solid confirmation. Not only that, this could give a little peace of mind to Android fans who felt slighted by Samsung removing the SD card in the Galaxy S6. With FCC certification, we imagine it wont be too much longer before Sony makes it official.

Sony Xperia Z4 shows its face in new leaked photos

We’ve already seen the Sony Xperia Z4 from all angles, but that hasn’t stopped it from leaking again. Last time we saw renders of the device, but this time Sony’s follow-up to the gorgeous Sony Xperia Z3 can be seen in the wild. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of new info that we can take from the photos.

The Xperia Z4 has a front-facing camera on the left side of the Sony logo, whereas the Xperia Z3’s was on the right. We can also see the slits on the top and bottom for the stereo speakers. Other than that it’s looks almost identical to the Xperia Z3, and people didn’t seem to like that approach from HTC.

In terms of specs we’ve got a 20.7MP camera, 5.2-inch full-HD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, and IP68 certification, though it looks like Sony no longer has a flap to protect the micro-USB port. There’s no word on when we can expect to hear more about this device.

Sony officially begins rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop to the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact

Sony has announced that two of their best phones from 2014 is now receiving Android 5.0 Lollipop. We’re referring to the Sony Xperia Z3 and Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. The upgrade is headed out to Baltic and Nordic countries first, but Sony promises that expansions will reach more regions a couple of weeks after.

They also mention that other products in the extensive Z lineup will also be getting their upgrades some point after that. Remember that they’ve promised to bring the upgrade to every single device in the Xperia Z family, so you don’t have to wonder whether your older device is on the roadmap.

Here are the changes Sony decided to highlight for those of you eager to upgrade:

• Fresh, streamlined looks – based on Google’s material design, but retaining our minimalistic approach to interface and application design

• New look notifications and lock screen – with fully customizable settings, so you only get the information you really need

• Multi user profiles and guest mode – making it easy for family and friends to use your device, or the creation of dual environments for work and play…

• Android for Work – not only are business-ready Xperia smartphones and tablets unique devices for work – with waterproof form factors, great battery life and productivity features – they will now also be part of the Android for Work ecosystem

• Better storage control and customisation – with the option to easily move applications from internal memory to SD card – giving you more control over your content, particularly useful for devices with slightly less space

Sony Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact and Z3 Tablet Lollipop upgrade spreads to NA and more EU countries

Sony today announced that the Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade for the Sony Xperia Z3, Sony Xperia Z3 Compact and the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet would start to reach more regions as soon as today, including those in North America and many more countries throughout Europe (it was previously only available in Nordic and Baltic countries).

As most other OEMs have done with Lollipop, Sony integrates the best of the new update’s features — including notifications on the lock screen, mult-user support and a new notification shade — with the suite of software they already provide. That beloved software has also been upgraded with a Material Design look and feel across the board for those who are into that sort of thing.

Want the upgrade? You’ll have to have a computer handy as this is an over-the-wire process. Download Sony’s upgrade tool here (PC and Mac only, sorry Linux folks) and connect your smartphone, and it should find and download the necessary firmware to get you up and running on Lollipop.

Sony also took this opportunity to confirm that the Xperia T2 Ultra and the Xperia C3 will eventually get aboard the Lollipop train. There’s nothing to worry about for folks of other Xperia Z devices — even the very first one — as the company previously announced all of them would eventually see the new drags. After just 6 months T-Mobile stops selling the Sony Xperia Z3

Sony is once again struggling to sell handsets in the U.S. After just six months on store shelves T-Mobile has discontinued the Sony Xperia Z3. It was looking like the Z3 may have been leading a resurgence when Verizon got in on the action, but apparently that has not been the case. Despite releasing some of the most beautiful Android devices ever made there is just not a demand for Sony phones.

In the past Sony has been terrible with timely updates, and though they’ve improved in recent years, they’re running behind with Lollipop. Android users don’t trust Sony to provide the latest software on time. It’s really a shame, because Sony does make some of the most stunning devices, and their software is clean and lightweight.

The future for Sony phones is not looking bright. We’ve seen leaked renders and photos of the Sony Xperia Z4, and it’s almost identical to the Xperia Z3. If consumers aren’t interested in the Z3 they’re not even going to realize the Z4 is a different phone. How do you feel about Sony phones? Have you ever owned a Sony phone?

T-Mobile Sony Xperia Z3, Z1s one step closer to Android Lollipop according to software updates page

It’s been a good few months since we saw Sony officially announce Lollipop for the Sony Xperia Z3, followed by a rollout for the unlocked US versions. The update has eluded carrier branded models in the US but by now it’s a story you’ve heard before. Carriers tend to delay the update process with the extensive testing that goes into any software update for a device operating on their network.

When it comes to the T-Mobile model, things weren’t looking so good given the phone disappeared from inventory a few weeks back. But it didn’t take long for the Z3 to return to T-Mobile’s store shelves (and at a discount no less), leaving us feeling a bit more optimistic that a Lollipop update was around the corner.

It now seems T-Mobile has recently updated their software updates page, with both the Sony Xperia Z3 and its older sibling, the Sony Xperia Z1s, showing that Lollipop has officially entered into the carrier testing phase. T-Mobile has 3 phases on their page: manufacturer development, T-Mobile testing, and then finally a completed status.

The next phase from here is the rollout and a completed status. Now that we’re one step closer, that rollout can’t be too far out. Stay tuned.

Sony Xperia Z4 reportedly headed to Verizon, LG G Pad X 8.3 and HTC Desire 562 too

Every once in awhile, former tipster Evan Blass (@evleaks) comes out of retirement to drop some leaks on us. Even if that gorgeous HTC One M9 render never came to fruition (we can dream), Blass is back with some info on a handful of Android devices that could be headed to Verizon later this year.

Now, the Sony Xperia Z4 had a quiet launch in Japan a few weeks back and even if it wasn’t the complete redesign we were hoping for (and what Sony desperately needs), that doesn’t mean the phone doesn’t offer a solid combination of hardware and utility. Here’s the quick specs sheet:

According to @evleaks, the Sony Xperia Z4 will launch on Verizon at some point in the future and although there have been rumors of an even higher-end “ Sony Xperia Z3 Neo,” there’s no reason to believe this tip refers to that. The Z4 is also said to be joined by the LG G Pad X 8.3, HTC Desire 562, and the Apple iPad Mini 4th Gen. No dates have been announced at this time.

Sony empowers selfie lovers with the new Sony Xperia C4

Sony has a new smartphone on the way for folks who think the selfie is too important to leave up to a subpar front-facing camera. It’s the Xperia C4, and the star of the show is a 5 megapixel 25mm wide-angle front sensor with its own dedicated flash. The rear camera also isn’t shabby for its standards at 13 megapixels.

Most of the value will come from Sony’s camera app which will include a number of unique shooting modes. Style Portraits, for instance, let you give your photos a sense of style based on some theme, such as vampires or mystery. There’s also AR Mask, a feature that allows you to take a selfie with someone else’s face in in the frame instead of your own. Not sure why someone would want to obscure their own face with a photo of someone else’s, but there you go.

Other specs for the Sony Xperia C4 include a 5.5-inch 1080p display, an octa-core 64-bit 1.7GHz MediaTek MTK6752 chipset, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage with microSD expansion and a 2,600mAh battery. For software you can expect Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box, though not without Sony’s custom user interface sitting on top.

Pricing and exact availability have yet to be determined, though Sony did reveal that the device would be available in both single and dual SIM variants for a June 2015 launch.

Verizon’s Sony Xperia Z4v comes with Snapdragon 810 later this summer

Verizon has announced that they’ll be carrying the Sony Xperia Z4v later this summer. Their variant is a bit more beefy internally than the regular Xperia Z4, although it still uses the same Snapdragon 810 chipset. It’s a 64-bit piece of silicon that has gotten flak for apparent overheating issues, but it’s still a pretty powerful beast.

Their device also sports 2560 x 1440 resolution for its 5.2-inch display, as well as a roomy 32GB of internal storage (with microSD for expansion, if you need). You can also expect a 3,000mAh battery with built-in wireless charging (both Qi and PMA standards) and Quick Charge 2.0. Finally, you’ll get a 20.7 megapixel Sony sensor on the rear and a 5 megapixel camera on the front for your photo and video taking needs.

Verizon only had a “this summer” date to give us, though that’s not too long of a wait considering we’re already deep into the warm months. It’ll be available in Black or White. Be sure to sign up to be notified for more information once its launch nears right here.

Sony releases Android M Developer Preview for select Xperia devices, here’s the full list

While nowhere near final software, the Android M Developer Preview is a great way for devs to test drive the next version of Android before it’s officially released at the end of the year. That’s why Google introduced the program back when Android L (Lollipop) was first unveiled during last year’s Google I/O.

Normally, we don’t expect to see a developer preview running on much, not outside of officially supported Nexus devices or 3rd party custom ROMs. Today, the folks at Sony Mobile are now giving developers a shot at trying it on their Xperia devices as part of Sony’s Open Device program.

Willing developers can now create a test image for themselves and flash it onto their Xperia devices providing they have a knowledge in these things. There’s a fair amount of officially supported devices and Sony Mobile was even nice enough to provide a quick guide for those that needed a refresher. Watch: Sony Xperia Z3+ camera app crashes in a few seconds due to overheating [VIDEO]

Although available in some parts of the world, we’re still waiting for the Sony Xperia Z3+/Z4 to make its way to the states, where it will soon arrive on Verizon as the Xperia Z4v. So what can Verizon owners expect when it launches this summer? Hopefully, not the same problems the overseas variant is experiencing where the phone reportedly gets so warm, the camera app can’t run for more than a few seconds before it crashes due to the rising temperatures.

It’s actually a pretty common issue, one that’s affected Xperias in the past and not just the Xperia Z3+ which is powered by the Snapdragon 810 processor. After hearing reports of this latest “bug,” the folks at AndroidPit decided to put their Xperia Z3+ unit to the test. Sure enough, they were only able to operate the camera app for a little over 30 seconds before receiving a notification that the “camera will now turn off temporarily to cool down.” Video proof can be found below.

The good news is that Sony Mobile has apparently confirmed the bug and says that a fix is on the way. So there’s a good chance that when the Sony Xperia Z4v launches here in the states in a few weeks, this issue will be resolved. Of course, as we mentioned before, this issue has plagued Xperia devices in the past and with Qualcomm’s infamous Snapdragon 810 at the helm, we imagine Sony has their work cut out for them.
