T-Mobile reveals when Lollipop for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will officially begin rolling out

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 charging table

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 owners on T-Mobile have had it rough. They’ve had to sit and watch as Android 5.0 Lollipop rolled out to the Samsung Galaxy S5 in February, only to hit the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 in March. Even though we knew Lollipop was coming (it had already rolled out to the Note 4 on Sprint), it’s only today that we know exactly when we can expect that rollout to begin.

T-Mobile Product Manger Des Smith revealed on Twitter today that Android 5.0.1 Lollipop for the Note 4 (N910) has officially been green lit by T-Mobile, and that a rollout should commence sometime next week. Keep in mind that the update does not include the all new, super streamlined TouchWiz that appeared on the Samsung Galaxy S6 or Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. It likely never will. We also hope all those bugs Lollipop brought to other Galaxy devices have all been ironed out.

As always, you can check the status of software updates via T-Mobile’s Software Updates page here. You excited?

Twitter’s revamped Quote Tweet feature is now rolling out to Android

twitter quote retweet 1

Last week Twitter unleashed a revamped Quote Tweet feature that allows users to type out a full 140 characters for whichever Tweet they’re quoting. It was only available on the web and iOS, but now Android users are about to get in on the fun.

The company announced that the feature is now rolling out to the Twitter for Android apps, and sure enough there’s a nice update sitting for you over at Google Play right here.

The original Retweet option that only mirrors the Tweet to your timeline is still there, but if you’re wanting to add a bit of commentary there’s no better option right now than the native Quote Tweet feature. Have a go at it as soon as you find something worthy enough to be echoed!

Heads up, devs: Android 5.1 SDK is now rolling out

Lollipop statue

With the announcement of Android 5.1’s rollout, we figured it wouldn’t be long before developers were hooked up with upgraded tools to make sure they’re equipped to target the latest version of the platform. The SDK for Android 5.1 is now available for download. It’ll be identified as API level 22.

There isn’t much new to be had for developers in this particular update, though there are a couple of important things to note. For starters, there are new APIs that make it easy for you to make sure your app behaves properly in the event that your app is being used on a dual-SIM phone.

It was especially important for Google to introduce dual-SIM support with the launch of Android One in developing countries so it should be equally important for you to make sure your app plays along nicely. Other changes in the SDK include the deprecation of HTTP classes in favor of the new URLConnection classes, and improved carrier provision tools. Be sure to get updated as soon as possible.

Google Play Store 5.4 brings more immersive listings for Lollipop users, rolling out today

Google Play Store 5.4 update hero images resized

It feels like it wasn’t too long ago that the Google Play Store added those fancy colored status bars. It wasn’t that big a deal, just something that was introduced in KitKat. Today, Googler Kirill Grouchnikov is revealing some new changes making their way onto Google Play starting today, but it’s only for users running Lollipop.

Google Play Store listing evolution

Evolution of the Google Play Store’s listings page

Once again, it’s not a big change, just a little something Android fans will get a kick out of. The Play Store now features transparent status bar when viewing listings, going full-on immersive in the latest update (Google Play 5.4). With the hero images for listings slowly inching higher up on your phone’s display, more content can be displayed below without scrolling. And that’s pretty neat.

For those that don’t feel like waiting for the updated Play Store to hit their device, you can download it from us below.

Android 5.1 rolling out now to the HTC One M8 Google Play Edition

HTC One M8 Google Now Launcher DSC08168

Google Play Edition devices were a great idea that might not have taken off like Google would have liked. That hasn’t stopped them from updating GPe devices to the latest version of Android. A user over on XDA Forums has posted a screenshot of his HTC One M8 GPe receiving the Android 5.1 update.

m8 5.1

The update comes in at 244MB large. Google says the update includes improves performance and stability and fixes bugs. Android 5.1 also includes tweaks in the way notifications are handled, as well as some other little changes that users will appreciate. HTC or Google hasn’t said anything about this rollout, so don’t expect all devices to get it right away. Keep your eyes peeled.

The OTA file has been posted on this website if you’re interested. Do we have any HTC One M8 GPe users? Have you received the update yet?

T-Mobile’s Lollipop update for the LG G3 now available, but not rolling out over-the-air

LG-G3-Software

After the Lollipop update for the LG G3 entered into T-Mobile’s “testing phase” early last week, we knew it was only a matter of time before it officially began hitting devices. Sure enough, Android 5.0.1 is now finally ready for the T-Mobile LG G3, but not in the way many of you are used to.

The update isn’t pushing out over-the-air, so you can’t update from just your phone alone. Instead, you’ll need to update the T-Mobile LG G3 via LG’s Mobile Support Tool (download it here). This means you’ll have to download LG’s updating software to your desktop computer and like an animal, connect your device via USB in order to apply the update.

LG G3 Lollipop Android 5.0.1 update

We’re not sure how long the update will only be available in this way, but it’s kinda neat that a manufacturer is giving users the option to update early with this method rather than waiting around for a carrier to push out new software to their device. Again, it’s entirely possible the update — which at the time of writing, still hasn’t been green lit by T-Mobile — will be rolling out to G3s in the coming hours/days/weeks. So, if this process is too much for you, just sit tight. Lollipop will be here soon enough.

Android Lollipop rolling out now to Samsung Galaxy Note 3 in India

galaxy-note-micro-usb-3

Earlier this week we wrote about Android Lollipop only being on 3.3% of devices, but that number is slowly growing every day. The latest device to see some Lollipop love is the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 in India. A member of Android Forums is reporting that his Note 3 was successfully updated to Android Lollipop via an OTA update.

After having the update for a little more than a day the user reports that battery life has improved with Lollipop. He quotes a screen time of more than 3 hours and 40 minutes, and he still had 9% battery left. The Note 3 in India is powered by an Exynos processor, which seems to have the update priority right now from Samsung. Now that we’ve seen Lollipop on the Samsung Galaxy S6 it shouldn’t be too much longer until most Samsung devices get updated.

Thanks skumber!

Sony officially begins rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop to the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact

Lollipop

Sony has announced that two of their best phones from 2014 is now receiving Android 5.0 Lollipop. We’re referring to the Sony Xperia Z3 and Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. The upgrade is headed out to Baltic and Nordic countries first, but Sony promises that expansions will reach more regions a couple of weeks after.

They also mention that other products in the extensive Z lineup will also be getting their upgrades some point after that. Remember that they’ve promised to bring the upgrade to every single device in the Xperia Z family, so you don’t have to wonder whether your older device is on the roadmap.

Here are the changes Sony decided to highlight for those of you eager to upgrade:

  • Fresh, streamlined looks – based on Google’s material design, but retaining our minimalistic approach to interface and application design

  • New look notifications and lock screen – with fully customizable settings, so you only get the information you really need

  • Multi user profiles and guest mode – making it easy for family and friends to use your device, or the creation of dual environments for work and play…

  • Android for Work – not only are business-ready Xperia smartphones and tablets unique devices for work – with waterproof form factors, great battery life and productivity features – they will now also be part of the Android for Work ecosystem

  • Better storage control and customisation – with the option to easily move applications from internal memory to SD card – giving you more control over your content, particularly useful for devices with slightly less space

Of course, it’s worth noting that specific rollout schedules depend on carrier and market, so if you’re not seeing the upgrade immediately you’ll have to wait for your wireless provider to put a bit more pep into their step. Let us know how things are if you are lucky enough to pull it down today!

Android 5.1.1 update appears to be rolling out to Galaxy S6 owners

galaxy-s6-edge-t-mobile-5.1.1

A user over at XDA is reporting to quite possibly be among the first on the receiving end of the Android 5.1.1 update for the Samsung Galaxy S6. Eduardo Mera (Sunderwear on XDA) provides evidence that his T-Mobile-branded Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge received the build only minutes ago, a build that appears to have been compiled by the manufacturer only yesterday.

Confirmed are reports that Guest Mode would be enabled in the latest build, and overall performance seems improved based on this limited evidence. But the news isn’t all good. It appears the update also comes with a locked boot loader.

We have been unable to confirm the update’s availability on either our Galaxy S6 Edge or Galaxy S6 units. Let us know in the comments if you have received Android 5.1.1 on your device.

Android 5.1 Lollipop for HTC One M7 Google Play Edition rolling out, Verizon’s One M7 gets it tomorrow

HTC One M7 thin case DSC01079

Verizon HTC One M7 customers need not worry about the fate of their device as it pertains to Android 5.1 Lollipop. HTC’s Mo Versi has confirmed on Twitter that the device will be receiving the upgrade as soon as tomorrow, May 14th. Details are scarce, but we can at least anticipate this will be a staggered rollout process that might take a while to get to every handset still in service.

For Those of you with the Google Play Edition, the update is already rolling out with the earliest reports having been seen just yesterday. You’ll only need to head to the device’s settings menu and check for updates to begin pulling it down (look for version LMY470, which is just about 280MB in size).

AT&T LG G4 software update (H81010e) rolling out now, doesn’t ask for permission before installing

LG_G4_16

LG G4 owners on AT&T are left scratching their heads after a mysterious software update was automatically installed on their devices without their consent. Normally when receiving an over-the-air update, the user will receive some sort of a prompt notifying them of an update, along with some form of a changelog listing the new changes. Some OTA updates can actually be postponed for so long before they auto-update but this one just kind of came out of the blue and installed it itself.

So, what was it? According to an AT&T software update page, it was a relatively small 26MB update (which lines up with reports) that began last week and was little more than an update to the AT&T Address Book app. The update is still Android 5.1 (build LMY47D) but updates the software to version H81010e. It’s not the first time AT&T has done something like this, and it probably wont be the last.

Anyone else see their LG G4 applying this update on its own?

Android 5.1 Lollipop is now rolling out to Verizon’s Moto X 2nd Gen

Moto_X_2014_Lollipop_Phandroid

Moto X 2nd Gen users on Verizon are being treated to Android 5.1, with Verizon announcing that a rollout has commenced. It brings the software version up to 23.16.3.victara_verizon.verizon.en.USvzw.

If you don’t remember, Android 5.1 was mostly a bug fixing update, but it did introduce a couple of key quality-of-life improvements. Namely, volume controls are now more easily accessible from the notification shade thanks to a new bell icon, and WiFi and Bluetooth connections are easily managed with new drop down mechanics.

The update also brings interruption / downtime controls to let you manage which notifications can get through when you set your phone to do not disturb, as well as factory reset protection that prevents unauthorized access to your phone even after it has been wiped clean.

The goods are going out over the air in waves, so be sure to check for the update (probably best to be on WiFi and have a good charge) in the settings menu. Otherwise, wait for your phone to let you know that the update is ready for the taking.

Android 5.1 is rolling out tomorrow for the DROID Turbo

Moto DROID Turbo DSC09781

Yesterday, Motorola teased the Android 5.1 update for the Motorola DROID Turbo yet again, letting us know once more than it was coming. The tweet more or less signaled the soak test which officially kicked off yesterday, according to Motorola Software Product Manager David Schuster. While soak tests usually mean that a full rollout is right around the corner (providing no serious bugs are found during this time), they’re limited to a select few of users from Motorola’s product forum.

The real question on everyone’s mind is when we — as in us regular folk — will see that sweet update hitting our DROID Turbos. We still don’t have an exact date, but Schuster did mention that if all goes well, we can expect a full roll out as soon as this week. Remember, it took barely 3 days for the Moto X’s Android 5.1 update went from soak to full deployment. With all that DROID Turbos have had to suffer through (the Turbo is still on KitKat, mind you), we can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel.

For a look at all that’s new, check out Motorola’s official changelog for the Motorola DROID Turbo right here.

UPDATE: Looks it’s officially going live (in phases) starting tomorrow!

Samsung Galaxy S5 Lollipop Update G900FDXU1BNL3 Rolling Out in SEA region

If you are rocking the Samsung Galaxy S5 and happens to be from Southeast Asia, you should keep an eye of the Official Android 5.0 Lollipop update as it is coming on its way.  This is SEA region’s first Android lollipop update and dubbed with build number G900FDXU1BNL3,  but only seen rolled out in Malaysia at this time being.  Just hope that it might also arrive to the rest of SEA countries very soon, if there are no any major glitches to its performance.

In addition, the G900FDXU1BNL3 has a different development  path and is basically built for Southeast countries only, but in theory it still similar to the European  firmware build such as the  G900FXXU1BNL9. So it’s not a better idea to compare which released build is better from one specific region to another.  This might have some less or more apps

However,  for those who wants to have their Galaxy S5 runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop you may get the update via Kies.  This is an update from previous Android 4.4.2 KitKat G900FXXU1ANI4 which is also only released in SEA countries last year.

How to Update the Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900F to Official Android 5.0 Lollipop build G900FDXU1BNL3

Samsung always advises us to prepare the following important notes to consider before performing the software update.  I have also added some useful insights why you should follow this procedures to keep your  phone in safe.

If this happens your device may just stuck on Samsung logo or welcome screen and can’t reboot normally.

Backup important data – You should back-up your important files, including contacts, emails, messages, photos, videos, apps and other stuff. Like I said while during software update process is interrupted there is a possibility that your data stored from your device internal SD card may lose or deleted when a sudden unexpected failure happened and it forces you to perform a factory data reset which basically wipes your phone’s memory.

Galaxy S5 should no root – Your device should not be modified or rooted, there is a certain circumstances that a modified and rooted Galaxy S5 SM-G900F may not accept any official software update anymore or it can accept an update but it might harm your device once the update has made. Most known error that says ‘firmware upgrade encountered an issue, please select recovery mode in Kies and try again‘ or “Your device has been modified Software update are not available” you should try to avoid that from happening.
