Cyanogen debuts new video series to highlight Cyanogen OS’s best features

Wondering why everyone goes so crazy over CyanogenMod / Cyanogen OS but not willing to flash it for yourself? Perhaps the company’s latest video series is what you need. They’re calling it Cyanogen Bites, a series of short video highlights showing you the best features of the custom Android-based OS.

Cyanogen Inc new logo

The first one is all about the app themer which lets you customize how individual app looks instead of having to use the same theme for the entire OS. Cool stuff, that, and you can really only get it if you use CyanogenMod. We’ll be on the lookout for more of these as time rolls on, for sure.

A tour of the Samsung Galaxy S6 “Edge Screen” features and settings [VIDEO]

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge screen settings DSC08583

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is one of the coolest looking Android devices in recent years. The curved edges make it look like a phone you might see in a sci-fi movie. However, the curved display is for more than just looks. Samsung has made use of the “Edge Screen” with some nifty features. Let’s taker a closer look at what you can do with the Edge Screen.

People Edge & Notifications

Since the Galaxy S6 Edge has curved displays you can actually see part of the display even when the phone is lying on its face. Samsung uses this area as a notification indicator. When certain notifications come in, such as a phone call, the Edge Screen lights up. If you’re getting a call and your phone is lying on its face you can even use the heart-rate sensor on the back to reject the call.

When the phone is not lying on its face you can use a feature called “People Edge.” By swiping from the side of the Edge Screen you can bring up a list of five favorite contacts. You can use these as shortcuts to make calls and send SMS messages. If one of the five contacts has sent you some type of notification it will show a colored line that you can drag over to view.

Information Streams

Another thing you can do with the extra screen real estate on the edges is display information. Samsung calls this feature “Information streams,” and it allows you to display information from several different sources only on the edge. When the display is off you can slide your finger along the edge of the screen to bring up the stream, and then you can swipe through the sources.

Some of the Information streams include Twitter, Facebook, and a few from Yahoo including news, sports, and finance. It’s a handy little feature for quickly getting some information without having to unlock the phone and dive into apps.

Night Clock

The Galaxy S6 Edge also has a Night Clock built in. When this feature is enabled it will show the current time and date only on the curved edge of the display. Since the clock is only on the edge display you can easily see it from your bed. The AMOLED display means the Night Clock doesn’t emit much light, and it can stay on all night with minimal battery drain.

What do you think about the Edge Screen features on the Galaxy S6 Edge? Are they useful or just gimmicky? Would you buy the Edge for these features, or do you just think it looks cool?

A look at the new “Edge Screen” features on the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge [VIDEO]

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge screen settings DSC08583

The original Galaxy Note Edge was Samsung’s first attempt at a curved edge display. It could be used as a ruler, or to display a stopwatch, flashlight, sports scores, app shortcuts, and more. The idea was cool, but the execution was not there yet. With the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge they’ve put the curved display on both sides and added some much nicer special features.

Instead of special apps for the edge display they’ve added shortcuts for your favorite contacts and cool color coded notifications. When you swipe in from the side you’ll see a vertical list of your favorite contacts, each with their own color. If you tap on a contact you’ll have the option to call them or send SMS.

When a notification arrives from one of these contacts you’ll see a subtle colored line on the edge of the display. Swipe on the line to pull out the notification and you’ll see a cool effect (pictured above). Here you can see the contents of the notification and take action to reply. The best feature comes when you set the Edge on its face. When a notification arrives the entire Edge screen will glow with the color of the contact.

You can also set up the Edge screen to show a “Information stream” of the time, weather, and certain notifications, and it can be used as a “Night clock.” Samsung has done a great job at turning what was originally seen as a gimmick into something people will actually use. Sometimes less is more. How do you like the Galaxy S6 Edge? Is it better than the Galaxy Note Edge?

Samsung touts the Galaxy S6’s fast and wireless charging features in latest ad

Samsung Galaxy S6 Fast Charging

You should have already heard about the Samsung Galaxy S6’s great charging capabilities by reading our review, but in case you haven’t Samsung has a cool new ad showing you just how great their new charging features are.

The company talks up the device’s ability to serve up enough juice to last 15 hours in nearly 15 minutes thanks to its fast charging, as well as the ability to charge the device wirelessly with nearly any charging pad without the need for extra accessories. They even show off Ultra Power-Saving Mode, a limited software form that scales back on processing power, displays apps in greyscale and other tricks in order to squeeze as much time as it can out of however much life your battery has left.

All of that is important for the device’s user experience. As noted in our Samsung Galaxy S6 review, battery life on the Samsung Galaxy S6 isn’t terrible, but it isn’t the greatest either. It’s a good thing that Samsung made the charging experience effortless and blissful in the absence of advancement in core battery technology, we’d say. Be sure to check out Samsung’s full video above.

Google Contacts gets a much-needed redesign and cool new features

google contacts preview 1

Google has announced an update to the web version of Google Contacts. It’s an app that has long been hidden inside of Gmail and has never gotten the attention it deserved, but that’s changing with today’s announcement.

The most obvious change is a Material Design user interface that is in line with their vision of a more beautiful internet. No secrets or surprises there. The new functionality is what has us most excited, though.

For starters, Google has made it easier to find and manage duplicate contacts. They say they’ve built the engine from the ground up to more effectively and accurately identify duplicates, and they make it quite easy to either delete or combine entries with one click of a button.

google contacts duplicates

They’ve also made a change where recent meetings and conversations with a certain contact will now show up on their page. It’s a nice and natural way to reference an encounter without having to get your hands messy with a search. Finally, when it can, Google Contacts will use Google+ profile information to automatically keep your contacts up to date (and anything it can’t catch you can always find yourself).

These changes won’t be available from within Gmail just yet, but you can get a preview by heading right here. Be sure to bookmark it for easy access while we await its integration into Gmail and (hopefully) Inbox by Gmail.

Wunderlist gets a Material Design makeover and new features

Wunderlist

Another app is getting some Material Design love. This time it’s the popular list-making and productivity app Wunderlist. The team has been hard at work the last few months building Wunderlist from the ground-up for Android Lollipop. Not only does it have a fresh coat of Material paint, but they’ve also added some really nice new features.

First and foremost is the new design. We’ve got colored status bars, floating buttons. meaningful animation, and a much more clean and refined look. It’s not a drastic re-design, but it’s just enough to make it feel at home in Android Lollipop.

Wunderlist has also added a few new handy features. First is the ability to put lists into folders. As you can see in the screenshots above I have two lists inside a “Shopping” folder. They’ve also made it much easier to add things from anywhere. You can create a new list or to-do with the floating (+) button, but also use the new widgets, or your voice with Google Now. All of these features are free for everyone.

If you’re looking for a great list-making app with sync across tons of devices and support for collaboration you can’t go wrong with Wunderlist. Download it for free from the Play Store today.

New app lets you bring one of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge’s best features to any phone (sort of)

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge display DSC08581

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge won’t be along until April 10th, but if you’re finding it hard to wait that long you can get a small taste of what it’s like to use one of its coolest feature ahead of actually getting one.

A new app called Edge Color Notifications has hit the Google Play Store, and its function is as you’d imagine: it’ll illuminate the sides of your display in different colors depending on who’s calling. You’ll be able to choose from the entire set of colors available on a standard color wheel, and you’ll have control over whether the right side, left side or both sides of the screen illuminate during a call.

Before you rush to go download it, there are a couple of things you should note. For starters, this doesn’t come with any of the cool features that the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge provides like being able to pull on a contact’s color to gain access to messaging and other contact options.

Something else to note is that the “cool” factor of this feature on the S6 Edge mostly has to do with the fact that its curved display makes it easy for the display to illuminate the surface it’s sitting on when face down. Kind of hard to replicate that if you’re using a phone without a curved display (of which there aren’t many).

Perhaps a bit of light can shine through, but it won’t be nearly as profound of an effect as it is on the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. Still, it’s pretty cool that someone was able to make something like this just days after they got the inspiration. Give it a download for free right here if you’re interested.

Samsung Galaxy S6 features new clock and calendar app icons that accurately reflect time/date

galaxy-s6-time-date

Mobile World Congress has come and gone, but that doesn’t mean we still don’t have some interesting tidbits from the show to give you. It’s not the most groundbreaking new “feature” mind you, but we think it was one many might have missed during their short time with the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.

We all know Samsung made some interesting changes to TouchWiz for the Galaxy S6, optimizing performance and introducing a more user friendly UI that uses less icons and more text. While I’m still bitter the Galaxy S5 didn’t receive the treatment in its update to Android 5.0 Lollipop, another interesting, albeit, smaller changes being introduced in TouchWiz are new system icons for the calendar (S Planner) and clock applications.

Unlike previous versions of TouchWiz, these icons now appropriately reflect the actual time and date, right there on the home screen. Sure we’ve seen something similar in iOS, but it’s the little changes to Android like this that get us excited about new OEM skins like TouchWiz. FYI, the clock app icon only updates upon every screen unlock, so you won’t see it changing before your eyes.

While I’m still bitter the Galaxy S5 didn’t receive the treatment in its update to Android 5.0 Lollipop, it’s a neat little touch and yet another reason I can’t wait to get my hands on these new Sammy devices come April 10th.

Google Photos is new again with brand new features and less Google+

google-photos-app-announced-io-2015

Google has always taken photos seriously. For a long time they’ve offered one of the best photo editing and management experiences available, and Google+ remains to be the best social network for photos. Today they’ve taken a fresh approach to photos again. The new Google Photos app looks a lot like the old Photos app that came with Google+ (same icon and everything). The big difference is that this is a standalone app. It’s no longer tied to Google+, and you can backup your photos to Google Drive. It’s a single place for all your photos, videos, and memories.

The new Google Photos app looks a lot like the old Photos app that came with Google+ (same icon and everything). The big difference is that this is a standalone app. It’s no longer tied to Google+, and you can backup your photos to Google Drive. It’s a single place for all your photos, videos, and memories. They really mean all your photos and videos. Google is including unlimited storage for photos up to 16MP and videos up to 1080p for free. FOR FREE.

The new Photos app has a bunch of other new features as well. You can search through your photos with keywords of things that show up in the photo. Your photos are automatically organized into People, Places, and Things. And it’s easy to share full res images and videos with a link. The new Google Photos app is everything we’ve been asking for. It will be available later today.

ASUS ZenWatch 2 comes in 2 sizes, features magnetic charging and a stainless steel chassis [VIDEO]

asus zenwatch 2 1

ASUS showed up at Computex 2015 as they always do (considering it’s the premier tech event in their own backyard of Taiwan), and they didn’t disappoint with a few nice announcements. One of the devices on tap was a new smart watch.

It’s the ASUS ZenWatch 2, and the rumors were true. ASUS cooked up 2 different sizes, one for those who prefer a little bulk and the more petite option that most women might prefer. The company is still going with a square watch face, though the chassis isn’t without a round nature.

The ZenWatch 2 features a physical dial (which we imagine can be used to navigate the system), an OLED display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, Gorilla Glass 3 and IP67 specification for dust and water resistance. You get a magnetic mechanism for charging the device, which is a great feature as no one wants to have to clasp their smart watch into a bothersome cradle every night.

On the presentation side, there will be a wide range of wrist bands available post-launch — some in rubber, leather and even a special edition Swarovski set featuring actual Swarovski crystyals — though the device comes with stainless steel straps as standard.

asus zenwatch 2 2
asus zenwatch 3 4
asus zenwatch 3 3

For software, you can expect the latest version of Android Wear and improved wellness and remote camera apps, though ASUS didn’t go into detail about what, exactly, was different. We’re not sure if the watch will support Android Wear’s new WiFi support (the initial spec list doesn’t mention one) so we’ll have to dig for more to see if this thing can offer the same level of connectivity as LG’s Watch Urbane.

And that’s about all we know. ASUS didn’t have pricing or availability to mention, which makes us feel as if we won’t be seeing a product ready to buy until late Q3 at best. Let’s hope we’re wrong, though, because the ZenWatch 2 doesn’t look half bad.

Pebble has started mass production for the Pebble Time smart watch, and a look at the first few features [VIDEO]

pebble time hero 1

Pebble has announced that they have started mass production on their latest smart watch, the Pebble Time. We’d love to say it’s fully great news as it means they’re on track to start shipping soon. The catch? They actually aren’t on time with their original deadline — they admitted this was a week later than they’d like to start mass producing, and that this has caused shipment estimates to move back by the same amount of time.

That said, a week isn’t a terrible delay compared to other Kickstarter projects (which we’ve seen could take another extra few months or even up to a year for the project creators to fulfill).

With today’s news comes a deeper look at the new color-filled interface, as well as a point-by-point list of features that you can expect on day one, and what’s coming soon. The video above will give you a look at how notifications, the timeline system and alerts work on Pebble Time, while the one you see below shows you how it handles weather.

Here’s that list of what’ll be ready as soon as you take out out of the box:

  • New timeline Interface. Review Past, Present, and Future events you care about right from your watch. Initial support includes timeline pins for calendars, sports scores, and weather.

  • Expanded app storage. Goodbye, 8-app limit! Pebble Time will store as many apps and faces as possible on the watch itself. When needed, an app or face not currently stored will automatically install from your Android or iOS device.

  • New Sports app. Keep tabs on the latest MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, NCAAF, and NCAAM scores with an official Sports app. Find which teams you want to follow to get start times, score updates, and more sent directly to your timeline.

  • Redesigned system apps in color. Alarms, Calendar, Music, Notifications, Sports, and Settings are all redesigned for Pebble Time’s new color e-paper display.

  • Voice replies to Android notifications. Dictate short replies for app notifications that allow direct text replies.

…and what’s confirmed to be on tap for future updates:

  • Voice response to Gmail notifications on iOS.

  • Voice notes app.

  • Stocks app.

  • Weather watchface.

  • Album art view for the Music app.

Not bad at all. Shipping will begin in the second half of this month, with many of the earliest backers starting to receive their orders in the last week of May or first week of June. Get excited!

Amazon Fire Phone update brings Android 4.4 KitKat and over 10 new features

amazon-fire-phone-books

Amazon Fire Phone owners might not be a plentiful bunch, but those who are rocking the phone as proud as can be will be happy to know a new upgrade is headed your way. The upgrade brings Fire OS’s base platform version up to Android 4.4 KitKat.

It sounds a bit silly to get excited about KitKat when Lollipop is out, but you have to remember that Fire OS is a completely independent platform that Amazon customizes to the bone. Having KitKat vs Lollipop wouldn’t stand to make much of a difference if Amazon is going to customize them to have exactly the same base functionality.

Along with the more recent version of Android, there are over 10 new features on tap. Here’s what to expect:

  • Support for Bluetooth Low Energy: Fire phone now supports Bluetooth Low Energy technology. To learn more, go to Connect to Bluetooth.

  • Change the wallpaper on the Home screen: You can now change the Home screen wallpaper to a different color or use your own image. To learn more, go to Change the Home Screen Wallpaper.

  • Lock screen notification improvements: View previews of new notifications on the lock screen and manage which apps can show previews on the lock screen. To learn more, go to View & Manage Notifications.

  • Additional keyboard options: Amazon’s keyboard now includes color emoji. Choose from hundreds of emoji characters to make your e-mail and multimedia messages fun and personal. You can also change the default keyboard on your Fire phone with another compatible keyboard downloaded from the Amazon Appstore. To learn more, go to Customize Your Language & Keyboard.

  • Convert video clips into lenticular images and set HDR to auto: Record video clips and automatically convert them into a lenticular image to share with others or use on the lock screen. With HDR turned to auto, your phone’s camera also determines whether a scene needs HDR and captures it to create a rich, detailed image. To learn more, go to Take Photos & Personal Videos.

  • Smarter calling options: Manage up to five people on a conference call, delete all previous calls in your history, and more. To learn more, go to Make & Receive Phone Calls.

  • Messaging improvements: Delete or forward multiple messages in a conversation, swipe to delete conversations in your Inbox, and modify your messaging settings with new options, such as the ability to change the text size of your messages. To learn more, go to Send, Read & Manage Messages.

  • Choose different colors for calendar events: If you have multiple e-mail accounts synced with your phone, you can assign a color for each account. When you select a new color for an account, your calendar events appear in that color. To learn more, go to General Settings for Email, Contacts, and Calendar.

  • Print from your Fire phone: You can now print personal documents, e-mails, contact details, and calendar events from your Fire phone to your compatible HP, Epson, or Canon printers. To learn more, go to Print From Your Fire Phone.

  • Enhanced enterprise features: With support for secure work Wi-Fi networks, single sign-on for corporate networks, and AES-256 bit hardware encryption, your Fire phone is ready for more work. To learn more, go to Protect Your Fire Phone with Encryption and Set Up a VPN.

  • Accessibility improvements: Easily manage your closed caption settings across the device and enjoy new Screen Reader features—such as independent volume controls and faster reading speed options—when you use the accessibility options on your Fire phone. To learn more, go to Accessibility Features.

  • Bug fixes and user interface improvements: Dozens of other bug fixes and user interface improvements.’

You can find instructions on how to get your phone updated to the latest version — which is Fire OS 4.6.1right here. And if you’re somehow in the market for one don’t forget you can always buy them pretty cheap from Amazon’s online storefront.

Google Voice survey needs your feedback to prioritize new features

Google Voice icon

We can’t say it enough: we love Google Voice. As Android bloggers with various devices for work and personal use, we’ve had a long love/hate relationship with the service since it first debuted years ago.

In order to help build a better service, the Google Voice team is looking for some feedback on how you use the features in Voice. Posted in the Google Voice help forum, the team has put together a relatively quick, 10-minute survey they say will help them “prioritize new features.” Anyone that’s used Google Voice in any capacity knows how incredibly important this is. Voice needs a lot of work.

Because time is money, just for taking the time to fill it out the survey, you’ll be entered into a raffle where you’ll have the chance to win a — wait for it — Chromecast. We know, it’s not much, but it’s better than nothing. You can find the link to the survey down below but please, Google Voice users only.

A look at the new features in Android 5.1.1 on the Moto 360 [VIDEO]

Android 5.1.1 for smartwatches has been out for a little while now, but Motorola took some extra time to make sure it was ready for the Motorola Moto 360. It’s finally rolling out now. This might be the biggest update Android Wear has seen to date. There are many new features and improvements that make the whole experience feel much more mature. Let’s take a look at some of the best new things.

Finally a built-in launcher

5-1-1 launcher

When Android Wear was brand new a lot of people thought it was missing an app launcher. There were a few different 3rd-party solutions, but it never felt like they belonged on Android Wear. Google has introduced an app launcher in Android 5.1 that feels much better. You can tap the watch face or swipe to the left to bring up a list of apps (the most recent are displayed on top).

The launcher is not just for apps. It’s actually made up of three pages: apps, contacts, and search. The first page shows the list of apps, but swipe again and you’ll see some commonly contacted people from your contacts. Tap on a person and you can send them a message. Swipe over once more and you’ll see the Google voice search page that used to pop up when tapping the watch face.

Use the watch without your phone

5-1-1 wifi

Android 5.1 adds WiFi connectivity to supported smartwatches. The Moto 360 happens to be one of the devices that can use this feature. You can connect your watch to a WiFi network and use it without being connected to your phone. Notifications and voice searches will still work on the watch. This feature is not intended to replace your phone completely, but it’s nice for those times when your phone disconnects.

Lock your watch when it’s not on your wrist

5-1-1 lock

Phones are full of personal data and information, which is why there are so many different security methods we can use. Smartwatches don’t typically store much personal data, so we haven’t really thought about how to secure them. Google has introduced a new feature called “screen lock” that should help the situation.

In the settings you can create a pattern password like you would on any Android phone. The idea is that when your watch detects the absence of motion, like if it’s charging on a desk, the screen lock will automatically engage. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to get this to work. You can also instantly turn on the screen lock from the settings.

Send hand-drawn emoji

5-1-1 emoji

One of the coolest new features in Android 5.1 is the ability to draw emoji. When you tap “Reply” to a message you can scroll down to see a new option for “Draw emoji.” It basically works like handwriting recognition, only instead of letters you’re drawing emoji.

Draw a smiley face and it will give you the smiley face emoji. Draw a weird squiggle and you might get the poop emoji. Some of the more intricate emoji are harder to draw, but it’s still fun. You can also simply choose emoji from a list if you don’t feel like drawing.

Ambient mode for apps

5-1-1 ambient

In previous versions of Android Wear it was nearly impossible to use apps for any extended period of time. Once the screen turned off it would close anything you were doing and go back to the watch face. This was really annoying if you were trying to cross things off a list, or browse an app. Android 5.1 fixes this problem.

Apps can now run in ambient mode (or “Always on”) if developers support it, which means they stay visible on the screen when it turns to black and white. If you don’t use ambient mode the app will still be in the foreground even if the display turns off. The best example of this right now is Google Keep.

***

Android 5.1 is a much-needed update, and it has breathed life back into the Moto 360. All of these new features and improvements make for a much more polished experience. How has your experience with Android 5.1 on smartwatches been so far? Which device do you own? Check out the Android Wear section of AndroidForums.com for more about Android 5.1.1.

Google features 17 awesome new Android Wear watch faces in the Google Play Store

Android Wear 17 new watch faces Google Play

We’re still getting acquainted with Android 5.1.1 on our Moto 360s (you can check out all the new features right here) and today — joining the massive list of over 1,500 watch faces already available for Android Wear — Google is adding 17 all new ones to the mix. Featured in a list on Google Play, these new featured watch faces have been put together from some pretty big names in fashion, art, and even mobile.

Google Play 17 Android Wear watch faces

There’s a little something here for everyone, with watch faces ranging from cute (Hello Kitty) to classy (Lulu Frost) and everything in between. We especially dig the watch faces from artists like Muji, and Kevin Tong or Bandai Namco’s Gundam watch face. Make sure to check all of them out by visiting the landing page on the Play Store right here.

New Google Keyboard update can sync your dictionary across devices, removes a few features in the process

Android Google Keyboard icon background

A new update to the official Google Keyboard app is hitting the Play Store today. The update brings with it a handful of useful new features, while removing a few you may not even miss. Or then again, maybe you will. The update — now on version 4.1 — adds the ability to sync your personal dictionary with your Google account, so you can share it across devices (or take it with you when you upgrade to something new).

Simply select “Google Keyboard Sync” from the new Accounts & Privacy setting followed by the Google account you’d like to backup your dictionary to, and you’re all set. The new privacy setting also allows you to delete your cloud data, or opt out of Google’s statistics should you feel the need. Oh, and for those that prefer typing on physical keyboards (like one of those fancy Bluetooth ones), emoji are now fully accessible by pushing the alt key.

Google Keyboard 4.1 update

As for things that have been removed, Google no longer allows you to swipe entire phrases by sliding your finger down to the space bar. Can’t say we’ll miss. Another feature you’ll no longer be able to select is the auto-correction aggressiveness, now replace by a single toggle to enable it or not. Previously, the Google Keyboard allowed to you choose the auto-correct level — modest, aggressive, or very aggressive (our favorite) — and while we have no idea what it is now by default, it seems you’re stuck with it.

One feature we’re not seeing the split keyboard for tablets that was introduced in Android M. We’re sure Google is working on it though and are confident it will pop up in a future update. You can update to the new Google Keyboard 4.1 by visiting the Google Play Store, or manually download/install the app right here.
