Verizon’s Nexus 6 leaks again, confirms March 12th launch with Android 5.1

Nexus_6_Midnight_Blue_Cloud_White-3

In recent weeks we’ve told you that Verizon’s Nexus 6 would be launching on March 12th, shown you images with Verizon’s branding, and shown you evidence that Android 5.1 comes with VoLTE support baked in. If you’re still skeptical that Verizon Wireless will finally be carrying the Nexus 6 in just a few days, we have some more information for you Verizon fans drooling for more information.

Verizon-Nexus-6

Yesterday on reddit, user Mh1781 posted the above image, which corresponded with our earlier reports that, indeed, the Nexus 6 was coming. We reached out to our very own dude in the know, aka sources close to Phandroid, and they were able to confirm the same information for us as well as provide pricing information. The Nexus 6 will be available for purchase on March 12 at verizonwireless.com, will be available in stores on March 19th, Verizon’s Nexus 6 will run you 9 with a 2-year contract, 9 if you decide to buy the Nexus 6 without a contract, or .16 a month on Verizon’s Edge plan. As for color and storage options, only the 32GB Midnight Blue version will be available.

Since Verizon’s Nexus 6 comes with Android 5.1, one can only assume that Android 5.1 Lollipop will be hitting other Nexus devices in a matter of days. Google generally doesn’t release a phone without providing factory images and source code in a timely manner. Fingers crossed Nexus owners.

Thanks Mr D!

HTC One M9+ renders leak again, still looks like the M8

HTC One M9 Plus

Many people were expecting HTC to show off two devices at Mobile World Congress, but instead we just got the mildly disappointing HTC One M9 (our review). The second device is rumored to be named the HTC One M9 Plus. It’s a variant with a slightly bigger display, fingerprint scanner, and the Dual Camera from the One M8. A new leaked render shows off the M9+ and it’s still not terribly exciting.

If you thought the One M9 wasn’t enough of a change the One M9+ is even less. From the back it looks nearly identical to the One M8. The camera is still round and the second Dual Camera is still present. This device is rumored to have a 5.2-inch quad-HD display, MediaTek processor, 3GB of RAM, and a 20MP camera. We were originally expecting the M9+ to launch alongside the M9 as a phablet, but it’s looking more like this is simply a variant for other countries.

HTC will officially announce the One M9+ at an event in China next week. What do you think of this device? Is this what the One M9 should have been? Do you prefer the One M9?

Google announces Android Wear 5.1.1 again, confirms which devices will get WiFi support

Android Wear update Moto 360 LG G Watch DSC06834

Google announced Android 5.1 for their smartwatches running Android Wear late last month, but few devices ever saw the update. Bringing WiFi support and always-on apps, the update debuted on the LG Watch Urbane only to later rollout officially to the ASUS ZenWatch only last week. For everyone else, we were left scratching our heads as to when this update would be hitting our devices.

Today Google took to their Android Wear help forums to officially announce Android Wear 5.1.1 again, leading us to believe that the update is fixing to rollout for the rest of us. They also confirmed that only a few smartwatches will be receiving WiFi support, leaving out the LG G Watch R (sorry, guys). Here’s the devices receiving WiFi support:

Google says to make sure the update hits your Android Wear device, make sure you’re running the most up-to-date version of the Android Wear app on the Google Play Store. The rollout is said to be rolling out gradually over the next few weeks, but we’ve started seeing reports from both LG G Watch and LG G Watch R owners that the update is already hit their smartwatches.

Oh, and if you’re curious, check out the video below to see how those fancy new wrist gestures work.

Google Photos is new again with brand new features and less Google+

google-photos-app-announced-io-2015

Google has always taken photos seriously. For a long time they’ve offered one of the best photo editing and management experiences available, and Google+ remains to be the best social network for photos. Today they’ve taken a fresh approach to photos again. The new Google Photos app looks a lot like the old Photos app that came with Google+ (same icon and everything). The big difference is that this is a standalone app. It’s no longer tied to Google+, and you can backup your photos to Google Drive. It’s a single place for all your photos, videos, and memories.

The new Google Photos app looks a lot like the old Photos app that came with Google+ (same icon and everything). The big difference is that this is a standalone app. It’s no longer tied to Google+, and you can backup your photos to Google Drive. It’s a single place for all your photos, videos, and memories. They really mean all your photos and videos. Google is including unlimited storage for photos up to 16MP and videos up to 1080p for free. FOR FREE.

The new Photos app has a bunch of other new features as well. You can search through your photos with keywords of things that show up in the photo. Your photos are automatically organized into People, Places, and Things. And it’s easy to share full res images and videos with a link. The new Google Photos app is everything we’ve been asking for. It will be available later today.

Imagine never having to charge your phone again [VIDEO]

wattup

Yesterday, we told you guys about a cool smartphone case that proposed to “capture” the energy outputted by your phone and convert it into usable DC energy. The idea is cool, sure, but many of you questioned the practical purpose, technical validity and even whether the technology exists.

Well, we can tell you the technology does exist. RF energy harvesting is a real thing, so there should be no question in that regard. It’s the application of said technology that makes the difference between revolutionary invention and wet dream.

Energous‘ forthcoming product — dubbed WattUp — is of the former variety, we believe. Like yesterday’s featured case, WattUp aims to capture RF energy and convert it into usable DC power, only it’s not claiming to be sucking up your phone’s excess power for its source of RF goodness. Instead, you set up a unit whose sole dedicated purpose is to blast RF energy, and your device — perhaps one with a proper case — captures that pocket of energy to be used for charging the device.

energous wattup

You can see this in action in the demo video above, where the gracious CEO demonstrates a cellphone that is being charged wirelessly, and without a charging pad, to boot. Here’s a quick explanation of it in layman’s terms, if you prefer:

WattUp™ uses pocket-forming technology to accurately direct energy to the receiver.  By dynamically adjusting the shape and content of the RF waves they can be directed to a specific location in 3D space.  There, the energy is gathered by the receiver’s metamaterial array where WattUp™ ASICs convert the RF signal to DC current, delivering a charge.

Needing a case for this sort of thing isn’t the most ideal, we’d say, but it’s what the company is doing in the area of logistics that has us most excited. Their aim is to get RF harvesting systems inside your tablets, smartphones and smart watches as standard, and they claim they’re already in talks with major OEMs to make that happen.

It’s also worth noting that the approach is two-pronged, as they are also exploring razor-thin units that can be put inside televisions, refrigerator doors or what have you. The hope is that you can have a home or office where needing bulky cables and wireless charging pads are a thing of the past. Simply walk inside, and you’re juicing up. How cool is that?

rf panel

Oh, and if you had any concerns regarding its potential impact on health, WattUp maintains that their system is no more harmful than wearing a smartphone in your breastplate pocket all day long. Take that for what you will.

Unfortunately we still seem to be a moderate stretch away from seeing this thing seed into the market. The technology isn’t expected to be ready for about another year and a half, and it might be longer still before we see any OEMs implement it in a meaningful way. Either way, this is the sort of stuff  we need to mitigate the downsides of modern battery technology while we wait for other breakthroughs, and we can’t wait to see what happens next!

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 leaks again, this time in the wild

Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-S2-8.0-1Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-S2-8.0

The Galaxy Tab S2 is Samsung’s next in a long line of Android tablets. Last month we saw leaked renders of the 9.7-inch tablet, but today we’re seeing it in the flesh. It looks like…a Samsung tablet. There’s nothing terribly special about the device until you turn on the display. That’s where Samsung has distanced themselves from other tablet makers.

The Galaxy Tab S2 will come in two sizes: 8-inch and 9.7-inch. They will both be in 4:3 aspect ration with 2048×1536 resolution, and of course the beautiful Super AMOLED colors you’ve come to expect from Samsung. Other specs include an Exynos 5433 processor, 3GB of RAM, 8MP camera, LTE, and Android Lollipop. Expect an official announcement later this month.
