[Updated] LG G Watch, G Watch R, and Asus ZenWatch are all missing WiFi, others safe

Chron_Watchface_Android_Wear_Phandroid
Yesterday, Google announced that Android Wear smartwatches would be getting WiFi support in the next coming weeks, bringing most Android Wear devices in line with the upcoming Apple Watch. Having a WiFi connected Android wearable is definitely a highly sought after feature, even if you still need to have your phone powered on and connected to the Internet in one way or another for full watch functionality. The question remains, does every Android Wear smartwatch support WiFi? Sadly, no.

Yesterday, both Motorola and Sony confirmed publicly that both the Moto 360 and the Sony SmartWatch 3 support WiFi, while other Android Wear OEMs have been silent. We reached out to LG, ASUS, and Samsung for comment on their offerings. According to LG, the LG G Watch and G Watch R do not support WiFi, however the upcoming LG Watch Urbane does. According to ASUS, the ZenWatch does not have WiFi either. We’re still waiting to hear back from Samsung, though previous iFixit teardowns confirm that the Samsung Gear Live does in fact have a WiFi antenna. We’ll update the article if Samsung responds.

Let us know how you feel in the comments LG G Watch, G Watch R, and ZenWatch owners. Your watches are now borderline obsolete thanks to this hardware fragmentation. Will you be upgrading to an Android Wear watch that supports WiFi?

Update: A previous version of this article stated that the G Watch R and ZenWatch would in fact get WiFi support with the upcoming Android Wear OTA update. Since then, we’ve received confirmation from both LG and ASUS that those devices would not get WiFi support as originally published. We apologize.

Update 2: Samsung has confirmed with Phandroid that the Gear Live will in fact gain WiFi support with the upcoming OTA update for Android Wear. Congrats Gear Live owners.

Here’s a quick recap. Will your Android Wear smartwatch get WiFi?

  • Moto 360 – YES

  • Sony SmartWatch 3 – YES

  • Samsung Gear Live – YES

  • LG Watch Urbane – YES

  • ASUS ZenWatch – NO

  • LG G Watch – NO

  • LG G Watch R – NO

Google Play Developer policies updated

Google Play Store

Google is sending out a notice to Google Play Developers about some changes they’ve made to their policies. The newly updated Developer Program Policy page adds revisions like a new sensitive events policy for natural disasters and/or global conflicts. Everything else is more or less changes to the language used for current policies. It’s pretty cut and dry, but here’s the full list of changes outlined in their email:

  • A new sensitive events policy addresses sensitivities around tragic events, such as natural disasters or global conflicts.

  • To protect users from harm, we’ve introduced new deceptive behavior language to more clearly define expectations for app functionality.

  • We’ve clarified language in the payment policy section for consistency and added links to a supplemental help center article for additional developer support.

  • To ensure a secure and consistent customer support experience for our users, we’ve introduced a provision which governs the transfer of in-app virtual currencies purchased in an app.

  • We’ve specified that apps should not harm, interfere with, or improperly access Application Programming Interfaces (APIs).

Developers who publish an application or game after today will be subject to the new changes, while those who’ve already submitted content to Google Play will have 30 calendar days to comply or risk their app being removed from the Play Store. Google is also asking developers to provide feedback on their terms and polices in a brief survey here.

How to Upgrade the Galaxy S5 SM-G900H to the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop Software Update

Samsung always advises us to prepare the following important notes to consider before performing the software update.  I have also added some useful insights why you should follow this procedures to keep your  phone in safe.

Galaxy S5 has no root – Your device should not be modified and rooted, as there is a certain circumstances that a modified and rooted Galaxy S5 SM-G900H may not accept any official software update anymore or it can accept an update but it might harm your device once the update has made. Learn about the new Samsung KNOX security suite. Most known error that says ‘firmware upgrade encountered an issue, please select recovery mode in kies and try again‘ or “Your device has been modified Software update are not available” you should try to avoid that from happening.

“This root method will work on Android 4.4.2 KitKat software build number KOT49H.G900W8VLU1AND1″

Rooting your Galaxy S5 SM-G900W8 is fun indeed, but you must also be aware that if you modify your phone your warranty will be gone for good. There is now a new security policy that has been implemented by Samsung and your carrier providers.  This is so-called KNOX warranty counter hidden inside the Android ecosystem in your phone. Once this KNOX counter tripped it will automatically void the warranty of your Galaxy S5.  So if you are completely a beginner without any knowledge of what the risk involved on this method, you should make a careful research first before attempting to root your phone. This process will void your phone’s warranty, so please be aware with that before you proceed.

Note:  Rooting will trip KNOX counter from ‘0×0′ to ‘0×1′. Once the KNOX security flag counter tripped you will lose your phone’s warranty. Install the USB Driver

Simply run the downloaded USB driver to install. Without the USB driver your computer will not recognize your Galaxy S5.

Enable USB debugging mode – if you are having issues connecting your device to the computer try to enable the this option. In your Samsung Galaxy S5, go to Settings>> About device>> then look for the firmware build number and then tap that build number for around 7-times until a message pop-ups that says something “congratulations you are now a developer”.
Remove the external micro SD card – if you have one, to avoid any failures and error during the flashing process.
TURN OFF the Reactivation Lock – This is only needed if you already turned-it-ON, from which you cannot modify the system when it’s turned-ON. Just tap on Settings>>Security>>Reactivation Lock and then uncheck the Turn Reactivation lock on.

Confirm that you have the Galaxy S5 SM-G900W8 – This may sound awful but risk from messing-up the phone also started here. What if you have an unlocked Galaxy S5 that comes from other countries like US and Europe and then now simply works on any Canadian mobile networks and or SIM cards. To do this just head-over to your phone Settings>>About Device>>Then look for the Model number.  It should be SM-N900W8 indicated from there or else if you have the other model number, this will not work and it may ended-up into bootloops or otherwise resulted into soft-bricks.

Run Odin downloader Odin3_v3.09 on your PC desktop. Watch out the check-boxes options on the right top of Odin, ensure that the ‘RE-PARTITION’ and the ‘AUTO-REBOOT , just leave alone the ‘F.RESET TIME’ check-box remained checked.

Reboot your Galaxy S5 SM-G900W8 into Download Mode

Connect your Galaxy S5 SM-G900W8 on your computer or Laptop

Once you already reboot the phone in download mode, simply connect the phone to your PC or laptop USB.
In Odin window – the ID:COM box will turn to blue color and indicates the COM port number and a word “Added” on a log box will prompt you that the device is already detected or recognized by Odin. USB port numbers in Odin download mode starts from zero to  seven. If you do not see a COM port number then there’s something missing or went wrong. You may read again from the top of this post.

Simply click on the AP button, then browse to the folder where you put the “CF-Auto-Root-kltecan-kltevl-smg900w8tar.md5″ that you have previously downloaded and then select and load it.
Odin should look like this picture below.

Root Galaxy S5 G900F with CF-Auto-Root

Once if all set and ready to fire-up, hit the “START” button in Odin to begin flashing the CF-Auto Root on your Galaxy S5 SM-G900W8.

Do not ever interrupt your computer and your Galaxy S5 while already in flashing already started, such as disconnecting the USB data cable or turning off the device. Just wait until it completely finishes, it may takes around a minute to flash the CF-Auto root.

You may then check if you successfully rooted your Galaxy S5 SM-G900W8, just simply look for the ‘SuperSU’ on the apps menu.
