TeamWin Recovery Project for the Samsung Galaxy S6 released

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge DSC08448

In case you were wondering whether the best custom recovery in the land would come to the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, wonder no more. TeamWin has released TWRP (TeamWin Recovery Project) for the Samsung Galaxy S6.

There are install methods that support both rooted (download this app from Google Play for a quick and easy install) and unrooted (flash a file through Odin) devices so if a custom recovery is what you desire there should be little in your way to get it.

TeamWin has download links and installation instructions right here, so be sure to check it out if you’re interested. Remember to read everything thoroughly, only use TeamWin’s recommended download links, and know that anything that happens as a result is no one’s fault but your own. Knowing all that, have at it!

Google might have accidentally released a new “Interactive Events” app in Google Play

interactive events app

Someone at Google’s Mountain View headquarters may have jumped the gun on publishing a new app Google is working on. It’s called “Interactive Events,” and at first glance it appears to be a second-screen app that’ll give you more information about whatever event you might be attending.

For something like Google I/O, you might get an event code or QR code to scan before the keynote and get biographies and speaking notes from any of the keynote speakers in attendance. It sounds like it’d be a pretty neat tool to make sure you have all the info you need about the events you’re attending.

There’s just one problem: the app seems to be unfinished. Upon downloading it from Google Play we’re met with the following dogfooding dialog box:

dogfood interactive events

Dismissing the dialog and accepting the app’s terms of use takes us to a menu to scan a QR code and enter an event code, but we obviously don’t have any valid codes to see what lies beyond that. A couple of screenshots from Google Play give us a decent idea of what to expect for now, but we’ll have to wait until Google clears things up to get a look for ourselves.

google interactive events

Download it if you want, but it’s pretty useless right now and we’re hoping some light is shed on it before too long.

US Cellular has released Android 5.0.1 Lollipop for the Samsung Galaxy S5

Samsung Galaxy S5 back DSC05780

It hasn’t been too long since we last saw a Lollipop update head out to the Samsung Galaxy S5. After Verizon pushed, pulled, and then last week re-pushed Lollipop out to the Galaxy S5, we’re now seeing another carrier give the S5 some update love.

In what shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, trailing behind most carriers once again is US Cellular. As revealed on their software updates page, US Cellular is now officially ready to push out Android 5.0.1 Lollipop to Galaxy S5 handsets on their network and with it, all the features and enhancements (for better or worse) that were introduced in Lollipop. Here’s what you can expect from software version OG900R4VXU1BOC1:

  • Material Design – The new operating system has a new look and feel that is colorful and fresh. Your experience will include more fluid animations along with improved applications and personalization options like themes, colors and widgets.

  • Your device, your rules – For fewer worries and disruptions, adjust your settings so only certain people and notifications get through. When it’s important, respond directly from your lock screen.

  • More ways to secure your device – Share your device securely with guest user mode. Or create multiple user accounts to enable friends to log in on your device. In either case, no one will be able to access any of your stuff. And you can use Android Smart Lock to secure your phone or tablet by pairing it with a trusted device like your wearable or even your car.

  • Pick up where you left off – The songs, photos, apps, and even recent searches from one of your Android devices can be immediately enjoyed across all of your Android devices.

One thing Lollipop for the S5 is missing? The lighter, more streamlined TouchWiz user interface as found on the Galaxy S6. We can’t for the life of us figure out why Samsung wont bring this to their older devices, but if there was ever a time to do their customers a solid, it was during a major software update like Android 5.0. What a shame.

OnePlus One will not get Android 5.1 until the OnePlus 2 is released

OnePlus One DSC06079

When OnePlus broke up with Cyanogen it made things a little more difficult for them on the software front. They were able to update the OnePlus One to Lollipop with their own OxygenOS, but it looks like the next update may take a while. Many users have been asking about OxygenOS’ Android 5.1 update. OnePlus says it won’t be available until after the upcoming OnePlus 2 is released.

We don’t know a ton about the OnePlus 2, but it must be relatively close if OnePlus is already referencing it by name. The OnePlus One was announced and released in April of 2014, so we’re already past the year anniversary. It’s a bummer for current OnePlus One owners who were promised fast updates to the latest versions of Android. Once again the #neversettle mantra has come back to haunt OnePlus.

Note: If you’re OnePlus has the CyanogenOS ROM you may already have Android 5.1. The 12.1 update (based on 5.1) is currently in testing.

How to Upgrade the Galaxy S5 SM-G900H to the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop Software Update

Samsung always advises us to prepare the following important notes to consider before performing the software update.  I have also added some useful insights why you should follow this procedures to keep your  phone in safe.

Recharge the phone’s battery – You should make sure your device is fully recharged before performing the software update. Do not also remove the battery during the software update is in progress. A power failures may cause damaged to your device that might results as we so-called “soft-bricks”. If this happens your device may just stuck on Samsung logo or welcome screen and can’t reboot normally.

Back important data – You should back-up your important files, including contacts, emails, messages, photos, videos, apps and other stuff. Like I said while during software update process is interrupted there is a possibility that your data stored from your device internal SD card may lose or deleted when a sudden unexpected failure happened and it forces you to perform a factory data reset which basically wipes your phone’s memory.

Galaxy S5 has no root – Your device should not be modified and rooted, as there is a certain circumstances that a modified and rooted Galaxy S5 SM-G900H may not accept any official software update anymore or it can accept an update but it might harm your device once the update has made. Learn about the new Samsung KNOX security suite. Most known error that says ‘firmware upgrade encountered an issue, please select recovery mode in kies and try again‘ or “Your device has been modified Software update are not available” you should try to avoid that from happening.

Update to G900HXXU1BOA7 5.0 Lollipop Through Kies

Samsung Galaxy S5 Kies Software update download

The second method is a firmware update through Samsung Kies. You may head-over to your  local Samsung support page from where you can download Samsung Kies from there, and install it in your Windows or Mac computer. Choose the new Kies 3 which supports the Galaxy S5 SM-G900H and other Samsung devices running with Android 4.4.2 and up OS .  Once you installed Kies 3, all you need is connect your Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900H to the computer using the USB cable, then simply run and follow Kies on-screen software update instructions.

G900PVPU1AOA6 Sprint Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900P Android 5.0 Lollipop update officially released

New official firmware update build G900PVPU1AOA6 this is Sprint Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900P official Android 5.0 Lollipop update (LRX21T.G900PVPU1BOA6). Sprint is the second among major US carriers had to unleashed the much awaited Lollipop update just right after Verizon Galaxy S5 Android 5.0 Lollipop update to G900VVRU1BOA8 just within 48 hours ahead. While AT&T also dropped an update to G900AUCU2AOA1 but still  remains in Android 4.4.4 KitKat. T-Mobile Galaxy S5 no signs of any update yet, but we’re hoping that they might also follow very soon.

In addition, Samsung US support has also addressed some of the latter’s changelog details such as the Enhanced Voice over WiFi UI and Lumen tool bar being removed.  But apparently, there are lots of improvements and enhancements added in it from which the changelog given did not says it all. The roll out of G900PVPU1AOA6 Lollipop update is available via Over-The-Air weighing at 898.44MB file size, beginning February 5 and might last in a week until all users receive the update. Android software update rollouts usually conducted in phases which is typically they start at  select percentage of devices within around 24 to 48 hours.

Upon updating to Android 5.0 OS, users were advised to free enough memory spaces at around 3 Gbytes remained in the phone. The requirement is a must, failing to comply the phone will just restores back to KitKat OS. Once until a user generates the required free memory space he or she can retry to update again.
G900PVPU1AOA6 OTA update advisory

Below is the technical details of G900PVPU1AOA6 5.0 once the lollipop update has finished. Updating to Android 5.0 OS took me around 40 minutes upon downloading and installation process, as it matters also to my data connection speed. It booted quite much longer compared to those KitKat OS update days due to several optimization process in Android Lollipop.

Baseband version: G900PVPU1BOA6
Kernel version: 3.4.0-3859396
Build number: LRX21T.G900PVPU1BOA6

Once the update has made, you might also check for any apps you have previously installed if it still runs correctly.  All apps is requires an update prior to Android 5.0 compatibility or otherwise it just causes lags.

Again, the Lollipop OS update is now only available via OTA and we have not seen it in Kies firmware server yet, but might as well also available these following of days.

So, if you did not receive the OTA notification yet, just keep on checking. As I mentioned that the roll-outs is in phases, some can get an update while other will need to wait.  Make sure your device is not rooted and modified or else you will be in trouble while getting the G900PVPU1AOA6 Android 5.0 Lollipop.

How to Update to G900PVPU1AOA6 5.0 Lollipop via Over-The-Air (OTA)

This is the easiest method to get the Firmware Update via Over-The Air or so-called as OTA update.  which usually a notification message will directly sent to you from your network provider. It simply notifies you that there is a new software update available to download.  If you did not receive any notification messages yet, you can manually check the update instead.  You may only tap on your Galaxy S5 SM-G900P Settings>>About Device, then tap Software Update.

  • Find “Software update”

  • Slide your finger down the display starting from the top edge of your mobile phone.

  • Tap the settings icon.

  • Tap About device.

  • Tap Software update.

It will automatically tells you that a new update is available or your software is up to date when there is none yet. You can simply tap install now when you want to perform an update or install later. Please escalate to Sprint or Samsung support pages for further instructions.

Those who have a rooted Galaxy S5 G900P might not be able to receive the update, but you may unroot your phone first and manually restore to stock 4.4.4 G900PVPU1ANK4 to be safe before taking the OTA update. For more info just head-over at  Samsung and Sprint support pages.

Samsung always urge us to prepare the following important notes to consider before performing the software update.

Backup important data – You should back-up your important files, including contacts, emails, messages, photos, videos, apps and other stuff. Like I said while during software update process is interrupted there is a possibility that your data stored from your device internal SD card may lose or deleted when a sudden unexpected failure happened and it forces you to perform a factory data reset which basically wipes your phone’s memory.

Ensure that your Galaxy S5 should still runs on the official Lollipop released build version and hasn’t been rooted – Your device should not be modified or rooted, there is a certain circumstances that a modified and rooted Galaxy S5 SM-G900F may not accept any official software update anymore or it can accept an update but it might harm your device once the update has made. Learn about the new Samsung KNOX security suite.
