Deal Alert: Motorola giving free Moto E 2nd Gen (3G) with purchase of a Moto X 2014

The new Moto E on its own is a good value, but if you had your heart set on a second generation Moto X then you’ll be even more pleased with Motorola’s latest proposition. Buying a Moto X will get you the new Moto E for absolutely nothing.

It’s the 3G version, mind you, so if 4G LTE is a necessity then it’s probably not as sweet of a deal. But a free phone is a free phone and it’s hard to argue with .

The new Moto E added a front-facing camera to go along with yesteryear’s 5MP rear camera. You’ll also get a slightly bigger battery at 2,390mAh, 8GB of internal storage, 1GB of RAM and a 4.5 inch 960 x 540 display. This particular 4G-less option does ship with a Snapdragon 200 as opposed to the Snapdragon 410, so be sure to keep that in mind when thinking about its performance.

It’ll ship with Android 5.0 Lollipop, too, so you’ll be good to go on a fairly recent version of Android (5.1 being the most recent). The deal lasts through March 24th so you have a few days to take advantage. Do so over at Motorola’s comfy abode right here.

Google cut down Android malware by 50% in 2014

A common and over-used criticism of Android is malware. People love to point to malware as a reason why Android is unsecure and shouldn’t be used. Of course, the malware problem that people love to talk about is not much of a problem at all. Google made that clear with their latest Android Security State of the Union address.

Google published a very lengthy 44-page report that you can read right here, but there are a few bullet points of importance.

• Over 1 billion devices are protected with Google Play which conducts 200 million security scans of devices per day.


• Fewer than 1% of Android devices had a Potentially Harmful App (PHA) installed in 2014. Fewer than 0.15% of devices that only install from Google Play had a PHA installed.


• The overall worldwide rate of Potentially Harmful Application (PHA) installs decreased by nearly 50% between Q1 and Q4 2014.


• SafetyNet checks over 400 million connections per day for potential SSL issues.


• Android and Android partners responded to 79 externally reported security issues, and over 25,000 applications in Google Play were updated following security notifications from Google Play.

As you can see, Android malware is an exaggerated issue. Fewer than 1% of a billion devices had potentially harmful apps installed. In devices that only install apps from the Play Store than number drops to 0.15%. The moral of the story is the same that has been said for years, and it can be said for users on any platform: if you install trusted apps from trusted sources you will have no issues. It’s only when you start downloading from sketchy places that you will run into problems.

Apple and LG tie for best smartphone of 2014 award, Moto 360 takes wearables

Every year at Mobile World Congress, the GSMA — the folks behind the event — vote on the best technology, software and ideas in mobile. This year’s winners might have seemed obvious, but there were a couple of “gotchas” that caused us to take notice.

The biggest shock is that Apple didn’t take home the Best Smartphone award alone for the iPhone 6. They actually tied with LG for the LG G3. It’s sure to be great news for the South Korean manufacturer up against stiff competition from their neighbors Samsung or the folks out in Taiwan named HTC.

Motorola took home two awards for two different products. They won Best Affordable Smartphone (those which cost 0 or less) for last year’s Moto E, and took home the Best Wearable category for the stunning Moto 360.

Other notable wins at the Global Mobile Awards include Gameloft winning Best Game for Asphalt 8, and IFTTT winning the big grandaddy of app awards with their automated web service being voted the best overall app of 2014. Well deserved, we’d say.
