Download: Android 5.1 for Nexus 7 2013 LTE arrives, get factory images and OTA files here

New Nexus 7 wm

The Nexus 7 2013 LTE has finally gotten its shot at receiving Android 5.1 Lollipop, folks. The OTA is rolling out, but if it hasn’t hit your device yet you can get going a couple of different ways. The first is by downloading the OTA file here, renaming it “update.zip”, dropping it onto the root of your device’s storage and jumping into recovery to flash.

You can also grab the factory image right here, which can be flashed through ADB (you’ll also find instructions for doing so if you aren’t already familiar with the process).

Android 5.1 doesn’t add much to Lollipop on the surface, though it does address many lingering bugs and adds a few tweaks to tighten up the blissful Lollipop experience. Go ahead and get it loaded onto your LTE Nexus 7 2013 as soon as possible!

Google came dangerously close to buying Tesla Motors in 2013

Tesla Model S

While Google’s work on self-driving vehicles is already nothing short of impressive, think about how awesome Google’s presence in cars could be by now if their 2013 plans had come to fruition. According to Bloomberg, Google and Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk came quite close to a deal for Google to acquire the electric car company.

The talks were in the late stages, says Bloomberg, with terms said to be a buyout of the company at its full value of (then) billion, an extra billion to pay withstanding warehousing and manufacturing expenses, and Google’s word that they’d let Elon Musk continue to run the company for at least 8 years or until they’d released a third generation vehicle, whichever came first.

That doesn’t sound like too tall an order for a company that makes the single best line of electric cars available, though its future looked quite bleak at the time with the company struggling to sell enough cars to turn a profit. After butting heads on details, the two sides had gotten as far as a handshake, hammering out a grip of paperwork and going through the typical back-and-forth motions between lawyers, suits and CEOs before these types of deals are closed.

And then Tesla suddenly started selling a crap-ton of cars. They sold so much, and so quickly, that they’d turned a modest profit that same quarter, and there hasn’t been any slowdown since. Tesla even paid off a hefty 5 million loan from the US Department of Energy since that time, and the talks with Google were pretty much dead in the water.
It’s interesting to think about what could have been if Google had gotten their hands on Tesla. The company was already in the early stages of getting their self-driving vehicle prototypes ready for road testing, and they’ve also introduced a software platform for smart vehicles named Android Auto. The biggest consumer technology company in the world having the reigns of the hottest new electric car company would have sent shivers down the spines of automakers like Ford, Chevrolet and General Motors, for sure.Failure to get a deal done doesn’t mean Google and Tesla’s relationship will never produce anything, though. Elon Musk and Google CEO Larry Page remain close friends, and it’s entirely possible that the two could collaborate on a smart electric vehicle for the future (note to Larry: that’s an informal plea to do something with Tesla ASAP). Either way, we’re sure Elon Musk sleeps well knowing he still has full control of a company that gracefully recovered from the brink of ruin.

Android 5.1.1 factory images arrive for Nexus 7 WiFi (2013 and 2012), Nexus 10

New Nexus 7 wm

Heads up, Nexus Tablet owners. It appears Android 5.1.1 is already gearing up for an official rollout. Factory images for 5.1.1 (build number LMY47V) on WiFi versions of the original Nexus 7 (2012), Nexus 7 2013, and Nexus 10 tablets have already been uploaded to Google’s factory images page. We’re also seeing reports that 5.1.1 has already begun rolling out to the Nexus 10.

As always, you can either get a jump by flashing the factory images linked below (and erasing all your data in the process), or wait for the official update to hit your device over-the-air in the coming minutes/days/weeks. Hopefully with all the bugs squashed in these updates, a new batch isn’t unleashed onto our devices. Stay tuned for more.

Moto G 1st Gen (2013) now receiving Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update

Motorola Moto G

First generation Motorola Moto G owners — the 2013 model — are being greeted today with an update to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. It’s an update that’s been a long time in the making, with 5.0.2 originally hitting devices via a soak test all the way back in December of last year.

Motorola has had 5 months since then to iron out all the bugs associated with earlier versions of Lollipop, so we don’t expect to find any of them in this release. What you will find is a whole lot of changes on the UI side of things, along with a handful of new features introduced in Lollipop. As for the Motorola Moto G 4G LTE model, well, Motorola told us not too long ago that this version would leapfrog straight to Android 5.1.

For a full rundown of everything new, you can hit up Motorola’s release notes page here. In the meantime, jump into your settings app and check for an update if it hasn’t already hit your device. Make sure to let us know how everything is working out for you too.

Moto X (2013) begins soak testing for Android 5.1 Lollipop update

Moto X active notifications

The original Motorola Moto X may be close to 2 years old, but that doesn’t mean users are any less impatient to get Lollipop. It has been a long wait for this big update. Last month we heard the update was in testing and would arrive in a few weeks if everything went well. Apparently everything went well, because now we’re hearing the update is in soak testing.

Software product manager David Schuster says they are soak testing in the U.S. right now. If everything looks good again we could see the official update roll out as early as next week. They also are soak testing in Brazil and Canada. In order to get the update notification make sure you’ve accepted any updates from the Play Store for Motorola Update Services (to version 4 or higher). Do we have any Moto X (1st Gen) soak testers?
