OnePlus schedules event for 4/20, OnePlus Two incoming?

oneplus bamboo

After a report revealed that Chinese startup OnePlus would be launching not 1, but 2 handsets this year, former Oppo vice president Pete Lau n’ friends are gearing up to announce something on April 20th. The company — which has upped their employee count from 6 to over 1,000 new workers — announced the news, where else, but on their Google+ page.

OnePlus event invite announcement April 20th 2015

We’re not sure what they’ll be announcing, but it’s pretty short notice. Their announcement post didn’t give us any clues, only that “From here on out, anything could happen.” While it seems fairly sudden to announce a followup to last year’s OnePlus One, it has almost been a year since the original was announced. Still, we’re not ruling out the possibility of a new hemp backed OnePlus One cover either.

Jokes aside, we’d actually love to see a OnePlus Two and maybe smaller OnePlus Half unveiled on Monday. Despite countless flubs over marketing of the OnePlus One last year and an even more frustrating invite system, it’s hard to deny it was a great phone at an even more attractive price point. Recently, OnePlus launched their own in-house Android build for the device dubbed OxygenOS, followed shortly after by Cyanogen OS 12.

We wont have to wait too much longer, April 20th is barely a few more days away. Heck, even sooner if you’re in China. What do you guys think it will be. Even better, what are you hoping for?

We’re live from the Samsung Galaxy S6 (and Edge) event, here’s where to watch live!

samsung whats next mwc galaxy s6

We’ve zoomed from HTC and are now sitting at Samsung’s shindig in Barcelona this week. We’re expecting the company to unveil the Samsung Galaxy S6, and we’re likely to see an “Edge” variant with a display that curves on both sides.

Anything else Samsung is announcing will be quite the surprise as there hasn’t been anything else in the rumor mill other than the goliaths mentioned above. We’ll be bringing you all the info you need, but if you care to watch along you can do so using the YouTube embed above.

Acer schedules April 23rd event in New York, what will they unveil?

Acer April 23rd 2015 event invite

Acer already showed off their entry-level Liquid Z220 and Z520 during last week’s Mobile World Congress, but apparently they still have some new stuff coming down the pipeline. The manufacturer is announcing an upcoming event in New York where they’ll unveil… something.

We’re not sure exactly what they have up their sleeve (Android devices? More Windows 8.1 phones? Nobody knows for sure. In fact, the invite we received is more of a notification that an invite will come at a later date, but to be prepared and start making arrangements for travel. Stay tuned for more.

LG’s next event happens April 28th in 6 different cities, & it should finally bring us the LG G4

lg g4 event invite

LG has finally set a date for their first big event since CES 2015. The company has announced an April 28th shindig where they want us “see the great” and “feel the great.” We imagine this event will serve as the launching pad for the LG G4, especially since it’s being simultaneously held in 6 different cities (New York, London, Paris, Seoul, Singapore and Istanbul) and because LG has yet to bring us their flagship contender for 2015.

We still don’t know what, exactly, to expect out of LG for the G4. Recent leaks have shown that the device will adopt a design similar to that of the LG G3 of yesteryear and the LG G Flex 2 revealed at CES a few months ago. That said, leaks aren’t always reliable — ask @evleaks — and we could end up seeing something totally different.

One thing to note about the invitation being sent to press is that it looks like a leather book cover, such as one you’d find on a premium notebook. Does this mean the LG G4 will have that same faux leather with stiching we loved (or hated) on Samsung’s 2013 phones? That’s a slim possibility, but our bet is that — if this invite is indeed showing a notebook in its background — it’s teasing the Note variant of the LG G4 that will come with a stylus.

Or it could just be that LG’s PR team wanted to use a nice looking background, and we’re talking a whole lot of something about a whole lot of nothing. Either way we’ll know what the company is planning for sure once April 28th rolls around. Mark your calendars!

We’re here at the LG G4 event in New York!

LG G4 day

In less than a hour we will be officially introduced to the LG G4. We’ve got Rob and Kevin on the ground in New York to get up close and personal with the new device. LG has already revealed a lot about the G4. We know it will come in a variety of leather options. It will have a 5.5-inch Quad HD display. The camera will be 16MP with a f/1.8 aperture. We even know what the software will look like.

The G4 will also most likely have a removable battery and expandable storage, which will appeal to disgruntled Samsung fans. Other rumored specs include 3GB of RAM, 3,000 mAh battery, and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 or 810. Going into the event we know a lot, but hopefully LG surprises us with a few things. Are you planning on buying the LG G4? Do you like LG phones?

We’re live at the HTC One M9 event at Mobile World Congress, here’s where you can watch!

htc event pic

Just a quick heads-up, folks: we’re live at Mobile World Congress, and it all begins with HTC’s “Utopia in Progress” event starting at 10AM Eastern. Word on the street is HTC’s looking to launch the HTC One M9 we’ve been hearing so much about, which is poised to be their 2015 flagship.

HTC’s also gone on record to suggest they’re bringing more that we likely haven’t heard about yet. Smart watch? A new RE camera? Heck, a VR headset? Anything is possible, and the only way to get the news first is to tune in (whether that be to Phandroid for the latest news and hands-on goodness you can handle or checking it out on live stream right here). Get hyped!

Huawei schedules an event for April 15th to launch next smartphone

Huawei logo DSC08659

As we’ve noted in the past, Huawei is so hot right now. They showed off a beautiful Android Wear smartwatch, and their name is being tossed around for the next Nexus. People might not be able to say their name correctly, but they are definitely paying attention to Huawei. So what’s next?

Huawei is sending out invites for an event in London on April 15th. They’re expected to show off a successor to the Huawei Ascend P7. We’re not sure what market this device will be for, but Huawei does say it’s a “global product launch.” It’s also possible we could hear more information about the Huawei Watch and other devices. Hopefully they have something for us here in the U.S.

How do you feel about Huawei lately? Are you feeling the hype around their devices? Do you want a Huawei device?

We’re live at OPPO’s 10 year celebration event, here comes the R7 and R7 Plus

Stay tuned to Phandroid for all things OPPO as we get our first look at their latest addition to the Android world.

Huawei sends out invites for June 2nd event in New York

Huawei invite June 2 USA

Huawei is gearing up to announce a new handset and unlike the recently launched Huawei P8, this one is bound for the US. The Chinese manufacturer has just sent out invites to a June 2nd event in New York City and although it doesn’t reveal much, you can see some sort of smartphone press render peeking out from behind the invite.

With the tag line “See what we’re unlocking next,” it only makes sense that this could be an unlocked version of the P8 with US carrier bands. We’ll keep you posted as we bring you the latest from the event.

Nest’s first camera has been leaked ahead of June 17th event

nest cam 2

Our sources have been telling us that Nest will be making their own-branded camera following their acquisition of Dropcam, and that they’ll tie all their products together with a new multi-functional app. That information seems to have been spot on, if this leak is to be trusted.

What we’re getting is a very Dropcam-esque camera, except more slim and sleek than prior models. The camera will have a suction and swiveling base for flexible placement, and there’s a clean nest logo placed firmly beneath the lens. We also learn that the camera will use Bluetooth and QR codes for easy pairing (its recent FCC appearance confirms Bluetooth), as well as the ability to support 1080p video streams.

nest app

We’re also getting a first look at the new Nest app, which will no doubt allow you to control your Thermostat, Protect and Camera from one convenient location. The app doesn’t appear to show any hints of  between Nest’s products, but there’s a chance we could  be in for a surprise come June 17th (the day the announcement is scheduled to go down).

OnePlus 2 reveal date announced, launch event will be streamed in VR

OnePlus 2 VR event

We were expecting OnePlus to unveil another hardware component of the upcoming OnePlus 2 today but instead, the company revealed something else. Broadcasted onto (where else) but their forum and usual social media channels, OnePlus announced the reveal date for the OnePlus 2. The phone will officially be unveiled on Monday, July 27th at 7PM PT.

Unlike your normal product launch — which typically only live streams an event in regular ‘ol 2D — OnePlus will actually broadcast the show in 360-degree virtual reality. Because OnePlus knows not everyone owns a VR headset (I recently received my unit from Adult Swim’s free giveaway), they decided to build their own Google Cardboard unit only with a few improvements. It’s not available quite yet, but OnePlus tells us to check back where you’ll soon be able to order one (apparently free of charge?). You can find it here.

We’re sure to hear a lot more from OnePlus as the days progress, so stay tuned.
