The two big flagship devices that will dominate the Android landscape in 2015 have both been officially announced. First, HTC showed off the new HTC One M9, and just a couple of hours later we saw the Samsung Galaxy S6. Now we can put these two devices head-to-head to see who reigns supreme.

Just like with last generation these devices have a lot in common while being incredibly different. Both have displays in the 5-inch range, both have 3GB of RAM, and both have 64-bit processors. That is where the similarities end. The Galaxy S6 has left 1080p behind and moved to 2560×1440. The One M9 has a bigger 20.7MP camera, but we won’t know which one takes better photos until we can compare in real life. The One M9 also has a slightly bigger battery.

The design of these two devices is the most polarizing aspect. Many people love HTC’s industrial design language, but many people also love Samsung’s design, which has been given a considerable upgrade on the S6. The war between Samsung and HTC fans will never end, and these two new devices will make the decision even tougher. Which device is the best?

Out with the old, in with the new. Just like that last year’s Samsung Galaxy S5 is old news. The Samsung Galaxy S6 is here to dominate the Android landscape in 2015. With every new Samsung Galaxy device there are people with the old model wondering if they should upgrade. Let’s compare the new with the old and find out.

The last couple of Samsung Galaxy devices have not made compelling cases for upgraders. The design was becoming stake and overused, and the new features were gimmicky. This year Samsung went back to the drawing board and made some big changes. The S6 is glass on the front and back with metal all around the edges. It blows the S5 out of the water in terms of design.

Samsung has also done a great job at improving core features. They’ve bumped the screen resolution to 2560×1440, and the front-facing camera to 5MP. The rear camera resolution has stayed the same, but Samsung has done a lot to improve performance. The fingerprint scanner doesn’t require a swipe up on the screen anymore, and the S6 has built-in wireless Qi and PMA wireless charging.

Samsung has made the Galaxy S a hot phone again. This device should do very well this year, and it’s obviously worth the upgrade from the Galaxy S5. What do you think? Has Samsung made a comeback? Are you getting the Galaxy S6?

HTC One M9 vs HTC One M8 [CHART]

After all the leaks, rumors, and drama we can finally put the “official” stamp on the HTC One M9. There has been a lot of talk about the design of the M9. We shared the first leaked images of the M9, but there were some rumblings about that design being fake. Turns out we were right the first time. The M9 looks a lot like the M8 on the surface, but underneath they are very different.

The biggest visual change can be seen on the back. The M9 has a square camera cut-out and there is no duo-camera set-up. HTC is of course raving about the performance of the M9 camera, but we’ll have to test that for ourselves. The M9 keeps the same 5-inch 1080p display from the M8, but that is where the similarities end.

The M9 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810. The M9 should be buttery smooth and snappy. Another big improvement comes with the enlarged 2,840 mAh battery. More battery is always a good thing, especially when they can keep the size of the device the same.

The story of the M9 is going to be about how the design is “uninspired” or “lazy.” Let’s not forget that Apple and Samsung have been known to recycle designs for a couple of generations.
